What’s better than pancakes on Saturday mornings? How about pancakes for a great cause. The Kappa Sigma Pancakes for Prostates fundraiser was recently held last Saturday morning. This is a semi- annual event that serves as the fraternity’s national philanthropy and raises money for The Prostate Cancer Foundation. This year, all the proceeds went to prostate cancer research at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The Pancake Breakfast began five years ago with the start of the campus chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Since then, money has also been raised and distributed towards Kappa Sigma’s Military Heroes campaign to help Fisher House Charities support veterans and their families as they return from war. Fisher House provides “comfort homes” for veterans and their families at major military and medical centers in Virginia. There is at least one Fisher House in every major military medical center.

“This event has traditionally been an opportunity for WC students and community members to come together for a common cause”, said junior Nicholas Tremper, president of WC Kappa Sigma Fraternity. “Too often we separate ourselves forgetting that WC thrives off of Chestertown, and Chestertown thrives off of WC. Events like this show that the campus and community can stand together in support of worthy causes.”

Kappa Sigma hopes to increase awareness of prostate cancer, considering it is more common than most people think. They also hope to make more people aware of veterans’ experience as they return home.

“We hope to gain community and campus support for our philanthropies so that support for these causes happens more consistently than once a semester,” said Tremper.

“According to my count, we served over 180 people and raised $1,632 at the breakfast. All in all, it was a successful event,” said senior Nicholas Hall.
Be on the lookout for other campus events sponsored by the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and remember them in the future when you are in the mood for pancakes.
