This winter, Washington College has experienced mass amounts of snow. Along with the snow, the Cater walk and other surfaces of WC have become very slippery. With snow and ice covering all of the fields here, the school has decided to add two winter sports to the program.

A brand new ice rink will be built on the waterfront, near the pier. The construction will begin in May, when classes are over. The rink will be named Reiss Hockey Arena, in honor of President Mitchell Reiss.

There will be a WC Ice Hockey team and a WC Figure Skating team. The coaches of the hockey team will be Heinrich VonHugen and John Doe. These men have already been busily recruiting all winter and expect a huge success in their new team next season.

“Our recruits are all big men who will not disappoint Mother Russia,” said VonHugen. It is to be known that Coach VonHugen keeps a stash of Snickers with him at all times, for moments like the one quoted above.

John Doe is the manager, but will step in for VonHugen when necessary.

“I do a lot of the ‘laundry list’ things for the team, but also take on the responsibilities of a coach like recruiting, mentoring, and coaching,” said Doe.

With a team of 25 players, 15 of them recruits, they should be a force to be reckoned with.

The pier will be centered around the maintenance area of the rink. It will house the rinks two Zambonis, and will connect to a concession stand. To ensure WC is getting the most for their money, the administration has decided to hold open skates to select Shoremen and Shorewomen ice crew. The crew will be student run mainly because nobody else would risk skating on the Chester River. Photo by your Mother

The Shoremen Figure Skating team is expected to excel in its time here at Washington College. Coaches Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy have high hopes for the team.

“We’re gonna dance to one song, and one song only: ‘Lady Humps’ by the Blackeyed Peas” shares Michaels. He believes that there is deep emotion and motivation woven throughout the lyrics.

As for MacElroy, his only problem was “this ice has not been properly Zamboned! Where’s the warm-down room?”

We are confident that the construction will continue to develop and they will add in a warm-down room.

The campus is excited for this new addition, junior Sampson Smith shares, “It’s going to be the coolest place on campus. It’s always good to have an extra sport to watch during the winter.”

There are always the few who do not agree. Tawny Touhy, a sophomore here at WC says, “We are just taking more from mother nature, the open space is beautiful and a place for animals to frolic. We should never take away from their home.”

The arena is planned to be completely done construction by August 2014. This will give each of the new teams a preseason, and a chance to adapt to the new conditions.

The hockey and figure skating teams will make their debut at WC Nov. 15, 2014.
