Paige Kube, Editor in Chief

Senior/ Four year Elmer/ biology major, creative writing and chemistry minors

Reason for becoming Editor in Chief: I’ve been on the staff for four years and seen the enourmous progress The Elm has made. To to keep The Elm moving in the same direction was important to me.

Favorite part of the job:  As a writer, what I love is that you have the ability to tell a person’s story that has never been told. As Editor in Chief, I got to choose my staff. I picked individuals that who will not only improve The Elm while I’m here but also after I leave.

Ideal Superpower: Teleportation, because I hate to fly.

Emily Harris, News Editor

Senior/ Four year Elmer/ environmental studies major, English minor

Reason for becoming an editor: I really wanted to see what went into laying out a paper. As copy editor last year, I knew the editing process for stories, but that was a new side that I wanted to learn about.

Favorite part of the job: I work with a great group of people. And every issue or story that we put out is always a new learning experience.

Ideal Superpower: Mind reading, because I’m curious how others’ minds work.

Catalina Righter, News Editor

Sophomore/ Second year Elmer/ Soon to declare English major, creative writing and Computer Science minors

Reason for becoming an editor:  My previous editors said that they thought I was a good fit for the job, and I prefer it to writing articles most days.

Favorite part of the job: When all the quotes start to meld together and look like a story

Ideal Superpower: Perfect camoflauge, because I feel like you could be safe in any situation.

Emma Buchman, Opinion Editor

Sophomore/ Second year Elmer/ international studies and French majors, psychology minor

Reason for becoming an editor: It was a good opportunity. I usually don’t have good reasons, but I cherish the decision. It was also a good leadership role.

Favorite part of the job: Freedom with my writing. The opinion editor last year was very good at letting writers be free with what they wrote, but I like having even less people to answer to.

Ideal Superpower: Talking to animals, because animals are awesome.

Emma Way, Student Life Editor

Junior/ Third year Elmer/ political science major, anthropology and English minor

Reason for becoming an editor: I’ve been involved in The Elm since I got here. I want to go into journalism, so it’s a perfect way to gain experience and really put out work that I’m proud of.

Favorite part of the job: Going out and finding the news, because in Chestertown it can be hard to find. For example, last year I was walking on campus and saw a bullet hole in the windows of the new cardio studio of the JFC. No one knew what was happening, so I started asking questions and taking pictures.

Ideal Superpower: Teleportation because then I could travel in a snap. I could schedule one meeting at 8:30 and one at 9, and actually make them.

Hailli Woo, Lifestyle Editor

Sophomore/ Second year Elmer/ English major, creative writing minor

Reason for becoming an editor: I want to be a sports broadcast commentator. I thought it would help me move up and get internships like the one I had at the Capital Gazette this summer.

Favorite part of the job: Doing layout and being creative with it.

Ideal Superpower: Invisibility, so I could hear people talk about things they don’t want me to hear

Derek Stiles, Sports Editor

Sophomore/ Second year Elmer/ political science major, economics minor

Reason for becoming an editor: I was the sports editor at the paper in my high school, so I already had experience.

Favorite part of the job: Writing the articles.

Ideal Superpower: Time travel, because it would be interesting to re-live stuff.

Meaghan Menzel, Copy Editor

Junior/ Third year Elmer/ English major, creative writing minor

Reason for becoming an editor: I like editing other people’s writing. My friends always send me papers and stories to edit for them and give feedback on.

Favorite part of the job: Being part of a community on The Elm staff. I’d never really had that before.

Ideal Superpower:  Shape-shifting. I could fly, I could swim- I could do whatever I want.

Hailey Craig, Photo Editor

Sophomore/ Second year Elmer/ political science major

Reason for becoming an editor: I was really the only underclassmen photographer. My previous editor taught me how to do everything like editing, and I thought it would be a good experience.

Favorite part of the job: Taking pictures. And also feeling important on campus because you’re a part of the campus paper.

Ideal Superpower: Flying- Not with wings, more like Superman. I could go anywhere I want.
