An Immigration Addendum

Another high standing member of the Republican Party joined the ever growing chaos regarding immigration on Sunday, when Sarah Palin declared during a CNN “State of the Union” interview that immigrants should simply, “speak American.” While she quickly corrected the technicality of her remarks, Palin’s stance of intolerance towards not only immigration but the concept of a bilingual citizenship continues an upsetting trend. While America does indeed face a crisis in the handeling of illegal immigration, remarks such as Palin’s are marked by a blatant intolerance that at best violate long held national ideals and at worse continue trends of racially motivated violence, as evidenced by the brutal assault upon a homeless Hispanic man in August by Donald Trump supporters. Turning our backs on a history of cultural and racial diversity that breeds a multi-lingual environment is a backwards trend that needs to be addressed and rectified before any true progress regarding immigration reform can be put into motion.

Despite not declaring candidacy, Sarah Palin has shown vocal support for Donald Trump’s campaign and has even offered to be his energy secretary should he be elected.
