Volleyball Finishes Play in CC; The Shorewomen Finish Their Season with Matches Against Ursinus and Muhlenberg

In their match against Muhlenberg, the volleyball team completed their season in the Centennial Conference. Prior to the match vs. the Mules, WC competed against the Ursinus Bears on Oct. 25, their home finale.

The match vs. the Bears was the Shorewomen’s home finale.  In their sixth straight win over Ursinus, WC swept the match winning 3-0. In the first set, WC took the lead and had a 14-2 stance over the Bears. Senior and captain Alaina Geissberger solidified this lead with a kill– a kill occurs when the attack is unreturnble–  as the Shorewomen raced to the end of the first set, winning 25-7.

The second set began with a 7-7 tie, but WC turned it into a 15-9 lead when freshman Abby Smith made a kill. Junior Lizzie Baden and senior Taylor Horan finalized the second set win with the finishing point.

Ursinus took the lead in the third set, but WC pulled up their end making the score 17-12 on an error by the Bears. The Shorewomen ended the set and the match on a kill from freshman Isabella Sansanelli.

During the match, Horan had a match-best of 25 assists and freshman Kylie Peets had a match-best of five blocks. Senior Sarah Bentley had leading five aces and junior Kaitlyn Marino had a leading 10 kills. Marino earned the title of Goose Nation TV Shorewoman of the Match.

In their season finale, the Shorewomen faced the Muhlenberg Mules in an away game on Oct. 28. The Mules swept the match, winning 3-0.

The Mules took a 10-1 run in the first set, making the score 17-8. The Mules quickly finished the first set, winning 25-12.

The second set had a closer score of 27-25. Baden made a kill, leading the Shorewomen to a score of 25-24. Muhlenberg came back with two kills, winning the final two points.

The third set was tied at 20-20 when Smith had a service ace, but the Mules were able to control the score until they won at 25-21.

This match marked the end of the Shorewomen’s season. Horan had 26 assists and 10 digs, Baden had an impressive 10 kills, and Geissberger made a leading 5 blocks.

Geissberger made 296 blocks in her career, making her the third all-time high blocker. Horan finished her career with 56 double-doubles and has tied 2008 graduate, Caitlin Ward,  for the number of digs at 1,030. This was the final match for seniors Bentley, Geissberger, Horan, Emily Houck, and Amy Rohn. The Shorewomen finished this 2017 season with an overall record of 17-11 and a conference record of 3-7.
