After an impressive 10-7 record last season, being eliminated during the first round of Centennial playoffs by one point left a chip on the Washington College women’s lacrosse team’s shoulder. The returning 18 along with five new freshmen will take the conference head on for a chance at a conference berth.

In December of 2017, Head Coach Heidi Pearce, assistant coaches Julie Morse, and former Washington College goalie Maddie Mullen elected four individuals to lead the Shorewomen to victory this season.

Senior Cecily Docktor was one of four players selected as a team captain.

“I think that this team is one of our most talented teams and I think we have the talent to be a really big threat in our conference,” she said. Docktor holds the team record for goals and assists with 65 and 24.

“I anticipate that having a smaller team is going to give a lot of different people opportunities to do really well,” she said.

Rachel Shaw, senior, is another captain. She will be leading from the sideline as she is out due to injury this season. Having 33 starts in 38 career games, Shaw is no newbie to the game. She has scored 23 goals in her career and is ready to propel the Shorewomen to the championship.

Another standout from last season is newly elected team captain senior Autumn Spence. Spence has started all 51 games of her colligate career so far and has 75 draw controls as well as 71 ground balls, 27 turnovers, two goals, and four assists.

“It is my last season, but knowing who I have next to me and how hard we have all worked this year I think we should do pretty well,” she said.

The final captain is Madison Acra of Norfolk, Va. was picked. Acra has played 46 career games and will go into this season with 20 goals, 14 assists, 33 ground balls, 17 draw controls, and causing 15 turnovers. Acra is a standout in the classroom as well, being named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll since her freshman season and qualified for the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Academic Honor Roll.

The Shorewomen play their first game vs. Albright College in Sparks at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
