For many, there comes a point when one has to run away for a little while to find a place of belonging. Sometimes the only way to move forward is by trekking out over hill and dale, braving the wilds and seeking solace at the end of the long road. Socks, this week’s  Pet of the Week, knows this all too well.

Socks is a sweet-hearted Coli Mix who spent most of his eight years of life tied up outside. He was surrendered by his previous owner after he escaped, and went on quite the walkabout, eventually being brought to the Animal Care Shelter.

In some ways, Socks is still running, as he is a little shy at first. But give this gentle soul some ear scratches and he warms up quickly. Though he’s still learning how to be an inside dog — couches seem to baffle him — Socks already shows his love for the softer things in life. He is mellow and loves peo- ple. He appreciates cuddling, gentle pets, and easy, ambling walks.

According to Rodney Freeman, ACS’s Lead Animal Care Technician, Socks does not mind cats. Though Socks has had little exposure to young children, Freeman believes he would be fine around them. His feeling toward other dogs is murky at the moment, so a home where he’d be the sole recipient of belly rubs may be best. However, living with a calm canine sibling who could help him adapt to life in a loving home may also be a great fit.
Socks is neutered, house-trained, and up to date on all vaccinations. This gentle boy has love to give and a lot in life to catch up on, and for now is still trotting along on the winding path to his forever home.
If you’re interested in adopting Socks, you can fill out an adoption application online at or in person at the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County at 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, MD, or call at 410- 778-3648.
