Do you like writing? Talking to people? Seeing your name in print? Taking photos? Blogging? Then join The Elm!
Who we are: We’re a staff of editors, writers, photographers, cartoonists, artists, designers, and more. There are about 12 students on our editorial staff, as well as a growing number of weekly contributors. Juggling all our duties as staff members with our schoolwork, sports, and extracurriculars is a challenge, but it’s worth it when we pick up that finished product each Thursday.
What we do: We’ve been the sole student newspaper of Washington College since 1930. Since then, we’ve worked hard to consistently improve the quality and professionalism of our product. We publish about 24 issues of The Elm a year. The newspaper is a 12-page, tabloid sized publication, with five sections: news, opinion, student life, lifestyle, and sports.
Where we work: We do most of our work at the Sears Publishing House on the corner of Washington Avenue (otherwise known as that cute little brown shingled cottage next to the Hillel House). Just walk past Minta Martin like you’re going into town, and there we are! We hold our weekly budget meetings in the Pub House living room, host regular staff dinners and get-togethers with the help of the kitchen, and complete our writing, editing, and layout assignments in our very own Elm office.
When to stop by: As a member of the Elm, you’d be invited to our weekly staff meetings. They’re held each Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Pub House living room. There, you’ll be assigned work for the upcoming issue, review assignments with your editor, ask questions, mingle with other staff members, and enjoy the antics of a crazy editorial staff, as well as an occasional sweet treat.
Why you should join our staff: Aside from looking amazing on your resume, become a member of the Elm staff means you’re joining one of the most hard-working and welcoming groups on campus. You’ll see your work published in a high-quality publication, hone your writing and communication skills, and, of course, get paid.
How to join: Talk to us! We’re journalists: We love to hear ourselves talk. Feel free to stop by the Pub House during a Monday meeting, drop by an open house, or shoot one of the editors an email. If you know you’re interested in joining the staff, send a message to firstname.lastname@example.org with:
