The women's basketball team is looking to improve on its admirable 14-10 record from last year and possibly make the playoffs. The team has started its season 3-1 with impressive victories and their only loss in the finals of the Tip-Off Tournament by two points.
The women's season started off with the first annual Washington College
Tip-Off Tournament. The tournament included teams from Dickinson College, Baptist Bible College, and Grove City College. In the first game of the tournament, Dickinson lost to Grove City College. In the second contest, Washington was able to win over Baptist Bible College 70-60.
The win was an all-around effort. Five Shorewomen ended the game in double figures, including 15 points from freshman guard Kerry Lomax. Senior forward Kristen Snell scored 14 points and had a team-high 9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Maggy Kilroy led the team in assists and steals with 4 each, and also had 13 points. Washington looked like it would have an easy victory after they jumped out to a 42-24 lead at half-time. Baptist Bible was able to make a small run, but the Washington defense tightened up by the end of the game, using their up tempo offense to their advantage.
In the finals of the Tip-Off Tournament, Washington College and Grove City College provided the audience with plenty of excitement. But Grove City was able to pull the game out at the end with a 60-58 victory. Lomax led the way once again with 20 points, the high mark for the game, on 7-14 shooting that included 2 three pointers. She also grabbed 4 rebounds. Senior guard Megan Miller had 8 points and 6 rebounds, and Snell had another impressive outing, with 6 points and 8 rebounds. Zeng scored eleven points, and Maggy Kilroy dished out 6 assists.
The Shorewomen bounced back from the loss with a win against St. Mary's,
70-60. St. Mary's jumped out to a 34-18 lead by the end of the first half. But Washington came storming out in the second half with 71% shooting and outscored St. Mary's 52-26 in the second half, winning the game. Kilroy lead the team to victory with 26 points on 8-9 shooting and 8-10 free throws. Kilroy also had 3 steals. Zeng chipped in with 10 points and 3 steals. Karen Sieger had her best game of the season, with 14 points. Snell brought in 6 boards and counted 8 points.
The latest victory was most decisive of the season, 68-43 over Swarthmore. This helped the Shorewomen to a 1-0 record in the Conference and a 3-1 record overall. Lomax led all scorers with 19 points on 7-15 shooting and 3 three pointers. Kilroy had another excellent all-around performance, with 16 points and 5 steals.
