On Wednesday afternoon, the men's soccer team took on the visiting Mustangs of Villa Julie College, defeating them by a score of 4-1. With the win, the Shoremen improve their record to 6-4 overall, while Villa Julie falls to 5-7 on the year.
Villa Julie scored their only goal of the game when sophomore forward Tony Tamanini was first to light up the board with a score at 9:54 in the first half. The assist was credited to sophomore midfielder Tim Burton.
W.C. then retaliated with a goal by senior forward Dan Gerbasi off of a penalty kick with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
After the intermission, the Shoremen dominated offensively in the second half. Gerbasi was fed by sophomore forward Justin Daniel at 18:45 in the second, giving W.C. the 2-1 lead and what eventually became the winning goal. Daniel then racked up a goal of his own off of an assist by Gerbasi, giving the Shoremen a 3-1 advatage with 5:04 left on the clock. This combination was once again successful with a goal at :47, to give W.C. the 4-1 victory.
This past Saturday, W.C. took on the visiting Bears of Ursinus College, defeating them by a score of 6-2. Sophomore forward Justin Daniel got the hosts on the board early, with a goal just 18 seconds into the game, scoring unassisted. He then followed up with another score at 34:39, off of an assist by junior forward John Jenkins, giving the Shoremen the 2-0 lead.
Ursinus retaliated to cut the Shoremen lead in half, 2-1, with a goal by senior Thomas Regan at 21:18. There were actually two assists on the play, by freshman Mark Drinker and sophomore Chris Warwick. The rest of the first half remained scoreless.
W.C. started their offensive onslaught early in the second half when Daniel scored off of an assist by junior defender Lance Cassell. This was Cassell's first career point for the Shoremen. Daniel then scored his fourth goal of the contest at 36:06, giving W.C. the 4-1 advantage. There was no assist on this goal.
Senior forward Dan Gerbasi racked up a goal at 29:46, with Jenkins picking up his second assist on the day, giving the hosts the 5-1 lead.
Ursinus' feeble answer came at 24:15, when freshman Steve Wilkes scored off of an assist by Drinker.
The hosts would then add a little bit of insurance as sophomore midfielder Tyler Barrell scored the first goal of his career unassisted, with just 4:11 remaining in the conference contest. The final score was 6-2, in favor of the hosts.
The visiting Bears actually outshot W.C., 15-14, and also had an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Shoremen senior netminder Travis Beauchamp made nine saves, while Ursinus sophomore goalkeeper Alan Cohen stopped four shots.
W.C. plays their next game on Wednesday, with a game on Kibler field against Wesley College at 3:30 p.m.
