This Thursday, the women's soccer team hosted the visiting Mawrters of Bryn Mawr College, defeating them on a penalty-shot goal by senior midfielder Kristin Hill, giving Washington College the 3-2 victory. With the win the Shorewomen improve to 2-10 overall, while the Mawrters fall to 1-13.
Bryn Mawr opened the scoring in the contest, when junior defender Melanie Cree netted a goal off of an assist by junior midfielder Dalen Copeland only 4:23 into the game.
The Shorewomen then retaliated with a goal by freshman forward Kristin Samuel, unassisted, with 26:28 left in the opening period. Washington College took the lead, 2-1, on a goal by junior forward Ileine Sanchez at 6:12. The assist was credited to Samuel. Sanchez's goal was the first in her career.
Washington College then held the 2-1 half-time advantage, until the Mawrters came storming back in the second period. Sophomore forward Jennifer Lewis scored an unassisted goal for Bryn Mawr with just :43 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, deadlocked at two goals apiece.
The Shorewomen were almost unstoppable in the overtime period as junior midfielder Stephanie Cernak set up the penalty kick opportunity. Hill was then given the chance for the game winner, which was her first career goal.
This past Wednesday, the women's soccer team took on the visiting Garnet of Swarthmore on Shriver field, suffering a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat. With the loss, the Shorewomen fall to 1-9 overall, while the Garnet improve their record to 4-8 on the year.
The game remained scoreless for the first 33:10, then freshman forward Sarah Nusser scored off of an assist by senior midfielder Amy Markey at 11:50 in the opening period to give the Garnet the 1-0 lead, which they would take into the half-time intermission.
Late in the second half, Nusser scored her second goal of the contest at 18:33, giving Swarthmore the 2-0 advantage.
The assist was credited to senior defender Diana Hunt. Markey added a little insurance for the Garnet, scoring with 3:51 left in regulation play. Sophomore midfielder Heather Marandola got the assist, giving Swarthmore the eventual 3-0 shutout victory.
The Garnet held a decisive offensive advantage, outshooting Washington College, 23-5, and also had a 15-3 advatage on corner kicks.
For the Shorewomen, freshman goalkeeper Nicola Ventresca made 16 saves. Her counterpart, sophomore Sari Altschuler stopped four Shorewomen shots.
Last Saturday, the women traveled to Allentown, Pa. to take on the host Mules of Muhlenberg, falling by a shutout score of 5-0.
Senior Celina Boer started the scoring in the contest, with a goal five minutes into the game. Freshman Nancy Grove racked up the assist. Boer then gave the hosts the 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal with 26:57 left in the first half.
At a little more tha 20 minutes into the game, freshman Jennifer Vroman netted a goal off of an assist by sophomore Keri Greenberg, giving the Mules the 3-0 lead into the intermission.
For most of the second half, the Shorewomen defense held the strong Mules scoreless. Freshman Robin Necker and sophomore Nicole White were excellent in their defensive accomplishments.
Late in the second period, sophomore Jen Sands found the back of the net with 15:07 remaining, scoring the unassisted goal to put the hosts up by four.
Freshman Jennifer Ehret added one more for the Mules at 7:47, off of an assist by Sands, giving the Mules the 5-0 victory.
The hosts outshot the Shorewomen, 36-7, and had a 1-0 corner kick advantage. Ventresca was again consistent in the net for the visitors, making 20 saves. For the Mules, senior Jackie Vanderstreet started in goal, making two saves in the first half. In the second half, freshman Lauren Rice stepped in, also grabbing two shots.
Washington College plays their next game this Saturday when the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall visit Shriver field for the 1 p.m. start.
