In their two contests this past week, the Washington College women's basketball team provided the fans there to see it with close contests and excitement. The icing on the cake is the fact that they won both of the contests, bringing their record to 10-6 overall, and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference.
Saturday's contest was against conference foe Dickinson, and while Dickinson was able to get back into the game with a late run, outscoring the Shorewomen 21-13 from the six minute mark until the final few seconds. This cut a 61-52 Shorewomen lead to 74-73. The effort was not enough, however, as junior guard Maggy Kilroy nailed two free throws to seal the victory for Washington. With the loss, the Red Devils dropped to 5-10 on the season, and 2-4 in the conference.
Sophomore forward Katie Bierzonski led the Shorewomen with 17 points, and also played the paint for six rebounds and a game-high two blocks. Bierzonski's shooting was dead-on, going 6-for-7 from the floor and hitting 5-for-5 at the foul line. Kilroy finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, to go along with five rebounds and eight assists. Senior guard Diane Zeng chipped in 13 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Kerry Lomax was the game's leading rebounder with eight boards. The game's leading scorer was Red Devil sophomore guard Kim Selemba, who put in 21 and also had four steals.
On Tuesday evening, the Shorewomen faced off against another Centennial conference opponent, travelling to Ursinus. The game took overtime to decide, but the Shorewomen once again came away victorious, 66-60. With the loss, Ursinus, dropped to 5-10 on the season, and 3-5 in the conference.
The hero of the game had to be freshman forward Kristen "Rex" Robbins, who came off the bench and, in just 16 minutes, had the best game of her young career, scoring 16 points on 7-for-9 from the floor and sunk 2-of-2 at the foul line, and also blocked two shots. This included a run of 8 of the team's last 10 points in the first half. Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage, however, as the score at the end of the half was just 22-19, Washington.
Washington jumped out of the gate fast in the second, scoring the first 8 points of the period. Ursinus came right back, however, using a 16-4 run to jump ahead 35-34 around the halfway point. Neither team could gain a huge advantage, and regulation ended with a 52-52 deadlock. Washington dominated the extra time, however, to take the 66-60 win.
Besides Robbins, Zeng was the only Washington player in double digits, with 12 points. Zeng also dished 4 assists. Bierzonski scored 9 and pulled down game and season-highs of 14 rebounds. Junior guard Maggy Kilroy chipped in with seven points, four rebounds, and a game-high seven assists.
