As the Washington College women's basketball team runs to the final stretch of it's season, they end this past week riding a four game winning streak. The team was able to clear out its bench and win easily over Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, the final score being 72-38. While the contest against Gettysburg was closer on Saturday, the result was the same, the Shorewomen coming away with the 57-54 win. With the two Conference victories, the Shorewomen record jumped to 12-6 overall, 6-4 in the Centennial Conference.
In the slashing on Tuesday, every player on the team was able to get minutes, and every opne of them was able to score. Freshman forward Janine Morehead led the team with 11 points and another team-high of nine rebounds. Maggy Kilroy was the other double digit scorer, with ten points; she also dished four assists.
The Shorewomen ran with the game early, having a 24-7 lead at the ten-minute mark, and leading by as much as 30 points in the first half. WAC, in fact, was ahead 42-14 at halftime. The largest lead of the night was 41 points, in the form of a 70-29 lead in the closing minutes. Other high scorers for Washington included sophomore forward Katie Bierzonski, who scored nine points, freshman forwards Allyson Britton and Anna Mavrellos, both scoring seven points apiece. Senior guard Diane Zeng chipped in for the effort, adding five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. After the loss, the Mawrters record fell to 1-16 on the season, and 0-10 in the conference.
The game agianst Gettysburg was much closer, but the Shorewomen were able to pull the victory out. The team was led by Bierzonski, who scored 15, and also added seven rebounds and three steals.
While the game score was close, Gettysburg was only able to catch the lead twice. This included a 3-2 lead at the beginning of the contest. The Shorewomen quickly took the advantage away, and built a 14-5 lead. The momentum swung back to the Gettysburg bench as the Bullets went on a 0-8 run, bringing the score to 14-13 with 9:32 left in the opening half. Things stayed close up to intermission, with the Shorewomen leading 34-30.
The Shorewomen ran out of the locker room and and gained back the momentum, leading by eight points at two separate occasions during the period. Things looked pretty well in hand for Washington as they built a 53-45 with about 6:00 left. But Gettysburg fought to within one, 54-53, within the next two minutes. Yet 'Burg went cold once again, not able to come through in the clutch.
Zeng had 13 points, four assists, and two steals. Kilroy added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals, and five assists. Also for Washington, Lomax contributed eight points, and Britton chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
