The Washington College women's lacrosse team has certainly been turning some heads this season. After last year's campaign, not many people expected this year's 9-5 record.
The team split their games this past week, winning on Tuesday against Messiah 14-4, but losing to Salisbury St., 17-6. With the loss, Messiah's record dropped to 6-5. Salisbury's record improved to 10-2 on the season, and they showed why they are one of the top teams in the nation, ranked seventeenth in last Monday's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll.
Against Messiah, Washington jumped out on top, scoring the first two goals of the game. Though Messiah tied the score at two apiece, the Shorewomen then got serious and scored eleven unanswered goals, eight in the first, three in the second. messiah was finally able to get on the board again by scoring twice after this barrage, making the score 13-4, but W.C. the put the ball in the net once more for good measure, taking a well-deserved win.
Two midfielders led the way scoring for the Shorewomen. Senior Heather Cranmer and junior Linda Fortucci scored three goals each. Freshman Monica DeBenedictis contributed a goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Maggy Kilroy and junior attacker Jordan Holt scored twice each. Washington junior goalkeeper Sarah Moore had nine saves. The Shorewomen outshot Messiah, 34-15.
Although Washington has had a couple of blowout victories this season, they were handed one back on Saturday afternoon against Salisbury. The game started with Salisbury scoring the first three goals in the opening four minutes of the contest. W.C. came back to score their first goal at the 20:19 mark. For the next few goals, the teams traded goals, and the score was 5-3 with just under ten minutes to go in the first.
Salisbury made a surge at this point, and moved the score to 9-3 by the time intermission came around.
Salisbury kept the momentum going to start the second half, and the score was 14-3 before the Shorewomen could regain themselves.
The Shorewomen did not give up, scoring three more before the game was over. But with the nine unanswered goals, there was nothing they could do, as Salisbury went on to the 17-6 victory.
Senior attacker Katie Warwick and Kilroy scored two goals apiece for the Shorewomen, while Holt had a goal and two assists. Salisbury's assault was led by sophomore attackwoman Jen Mezzadra, who scored six times and dished an assist. Junior attacker Jen Ice led the way with five goals and three assists for an impressive eight points. Moore made eight stops for the Shorewomen, and the final shot count was 39-20 in Salisbury's favor.
