The Shorewomen had an excellent game on October 20 as they defeated Hood College in a non-conference win. The final score was 8-1.
For Washington, freshman midfielder Kristen Bozzella was the top scorer of the game as she put three goals into the net. Also junior forward Niki Dennison had a great game with three assists and one goal.
Ten minutes into the game Dennison scored her goal without the help of her teammates. Then Bozzella score back-to-back goals which were both assisted by Dennison, breaking the school assist record. This put the score at 3-0 with 18 minutes remaining in the first half.
As 10 minutes remained in the first half, freshman Betty Weller put the ball in the net. She scored her first career goal unassisted to help bring the score to 4-0.
Freshman Tori Guilfoyle ended the half with two consecutive goals. Freshmen forwards Katy Brown and Sarah Polhamus contributed to the two goals. This assist now makes Polhamus the third-leading scorer this year with a total of seven points.
After the half the score remained 6-0 until Bozzella scored with an assist from Dennison. This goal not only put the score at 7-0 but also put Bozzella as the second-leading scorer on the team and Dennison as the first-leading scorer on the team.
With about 14 minutes remaining, freshman midfielder Kelly McClure scored the first goal of her college career, unassisted.
Hood's only goal was scored with 5 minutes remaining. Senior sweeper, Edena Church scored this goal unassisted.
Washington goalkeeper, junior Quin Bowman made 5 saves. For the Blazer's, freshman goalie Amy Masciantonio stopped 22 shots. The Shorewomen outshot Hood 45-8 and also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Shorewomen traveled to Haverford, PA on Saturday as they played a Centennial Conference game against Haverford College. The score ended in a 4-0 defeat.
Fifteen minutes into the first half, junior defender Dani Metzger scored off an assist with a converted pass from senior defender Katie Douglas. Then as ten minutes remained in the first half, junior midfielder Margaret Neri scored with some help from senior forward Rebecca Fowler. This put the Ford's at a 2-0 lead.
As 30 minutes remained in the second period, Metzger assisted sophomore forward Alanna Murphy. Then 4 minutes later, the final goal was scored by sophomore Liz Young and assisted by sophomore forward Charlotte Hoffman.
Bowman was in the net for the Shorewomen. She received her seventh double-digit saves as she saved 15 shots. For Haverford, senior Christina Lahue and freshman Marissa Falk made a total of 3 saves. Washington was outshot 21-4 and also had a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
The Shorewomen's head coach Eleanor Shriver commented on the play of freshman defenders McClure and Weller as they continued to have excellent, strong play in the backfield.
With the loss, the Shorewomen drop to 4-11 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial Conference. The last game is on Saturday, as the Shorewomen travel to Johns Hopkins University for a game at 1 p.m.
