This past weekend the Washington College women's sailing team placed seventh in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Women's Fall Championship at St. Mary's College. That finish earned the Shorewomen the final qualifying spot in the Atlantic Coast Championships at Hobart/William Smith Colleges, scheduled for November 13-14.
The team was led by a strong performance in A Division by senior Joanna Johnson and sophomore crew Sarah Corson. The duo placed fifth, sailing against the top female sailors in the Middle Atlantic region. In B Division, junior Jessica Koenig and senior Shannon Parker solidified the team's overall score by finishing eighth.
This is the first time that any Washington sailing team has qualified for an Atlantic Coast Championship berth. At Hobart/William Smith, the Shorewomen will compete against the top teams from the New England, Middle Atlantic, and South Atlantic districts.
The MAISA Women's was won by host St. Mary's, followed closely by Georgetown University and Old Dominion University.
Meanwhile this past weekend, the Washington coed team was in action at the Kings Point Open at the US Merchant Marine Academy.
Washington finished seventh in a field of 16 schools.
Senior David Kissling and sophomore crew Lisa Semanick placed eighth in A Division. In B Division, sophomore Simon Day and junior Lellie Fluke finished seventh.
St. Mary's College won the Kings Point Open, followed by Old Dominion and the US Naval Academy.
This coming weekend Washington will be competing in the MAISA District Championships, the War Memorial Regatta, at Old Dominion University, and the MAISA Freshman regatta at Hobart/William Smith.
