Despite some strong individual performances, the women of Washington College basketball have dropped their last two games to fall to a record of 1-3.
The team traveled to St. Mary's before break with hopes of stealing one from the favored Seahawks. Junior guard Dani Rados poured in 21 points for the shorewomen but it would not be enough to overcome the 20 point lead that St.Mary's had built by the half. The ladies did not give up though and were only outscored by six points in the second period. Playing tough for W.C. were sophomore Allyson Britton, with 12 points and 7 rebounds, and senior Maggy Kilroy who pulled down 11 rebounds. Leading the way for St. Mary's was junior guard Felicia Harris who posted 23 points. The non conference win improved the Seahawks record to 3-0 and dropped the shorewomen to 1-2 going into turkey day.
In their first game back from the Thanksgiving holiday, Washington traveled to the bright lights of D.C. to take on Catholic University. This game would be much different from the St. Mary's contest as the teams started out hot but could not find the bucket in the second half. Going into the intermission the ladies had the game tied at 32 on almost 50% shooting from the field. Both teams also played evenly in the second half, shooting around 30%, but it was Catholic's advantage in free throws that sealed the game. The Cardinals went 9 of 10 from the stripe while the Shorewomen converted the only three they attempted. W.C.'s defense kept them in it until the end with 20 steals and forcing Catholic into 30 turnovers, but it would not be enough as the Cardinals took the game 57-55. Britton led the team with 14 points and eight boards, while Rados notched a double-double in the losing effort. Despite these two setbacks, Kilroy is still optimistic about the season. "I think the team has a lot of potential this year," she commented. "I definitely feel we have the ability to make it to post-season play."
The squad will open up their Centennial Conference play against Gettysburg this weekend here in Chestertown. This game is part of a men's and women's double-header on Saturday that starts at 1:00 p.m.
