The Washington College women's basketball team loss two close games this week to Gettysburg College and Swarthmore College.
Sophomore guard Steph Drevna scored a game-high 18 points to help the visiting Gettysburg College women's basketball team to a 59-52 Centennial Conference victory over Washington College Saturday afternoon. Drevna also grabbed six rebounds and earned three steals.
With the loss, the Shorewomen dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.
Gettysburg held a 30-29 lead at halftime. For Washington, sophomore forward Janine Morehead led the way in the opening period with nine points, and junior forward Kate Bierzonski had eight. Washington shot 38.5% from the floor in the first, but was just 9-of-20 at the foul line. The Bullets, meanwhile, were 11-for-32 from the floor in that half, but converted on 66.7% of their free throw attempts.
In the second half, the Shorewomen made just 22.9% (8-for-35) of their field goal attempts. Gettysburg shot 34.5% from the floor. The Bullets were also on fire at the foul line in the second period, shooting 7-for-10 (70.0%). For the game, Gettysburg shot 21-of-61 from the floor, and was 68.4% on free throws. Washington, meanwhile, shot just 29.5%overall, and only made 13-of-27 at the line.
Washington was led by Bierzonski and Morehead, who scored 13 points apiece. Bierzonski earned her second double-double of the season with a team-high 11 boards, sharing rebounding honors for the game with Dawson. Morehead pulled down nine rebounds. Also for the Shorewomen, junior guard Kerry Lomax added eight points and five rebounds. Three Washington players scored six points each: senior guard Maggy Kilroy, sophomore forward Allyson Britton, and junior guard Dani Rados. Kilroy also had eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Britton grabbed five rebounds. Rados added four assists.
The Shorewomen continued Centennial Conference play this past Wednesday, as they travel to Swarthmore College.
Sophomore guard Katie Tarr scored a game and career-high 25 points to lead the host Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 67-63 win over W.C. Tarr shot 9-for-14 from the floor, including 4-of-6 three-pointers, and also distributed three assists.
With the loss, the Shorewomen fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial. The Garnet, picking up the program's first-ever victory over Washington, improves to 6-2 on the season, and 2-0 in the conference.
Washington shot the ball well in the first half, going 14-for-24 from the floor, and a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line. Swarthmore, meanwhile, shot 44.4% in the opening period, and made just 2-of-6 treys.
Things went downhill for the Shorewomen in the second. The visitors shot just 31.6% overall, and made only 2-of-10 three-point baskets. Swarthmore's three-point shooting got better in that half, as the Garnet connected on 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and were 10-for-21 overall. The hosts also made good on 12-of-19 free throw attempts.
Overall for the game, Swarthmore ended up shooting 22-for-48 from the floor, including 45.5% from three-point territory. The Garnet was also 18-for-27 at the foul line. The Shorewomen finished shooting 26-for-62 overall, and 5-for-13 on three-pointers. Washington had just 10 free throw attempts and made six of them. Swarthmore also out-rebounded the Shorewomen, 38-30.
Washington was led by Bierzonski, who finished with team-highs of 15 points and seven rebounds. Morehead added 12 points, on 5-of-6 shooting. Kilroy had a season-high 10 points, plus six rebounds, three assists, and a team-high three steals. Rados and Britton contributed with nine points apiece. Rados also dished out a team-high six assists, while Britton grabbed four rebounds. Lomax had eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.
The Shorewomen will look to pick up their second win of the season Saturday, when they host Villa Julie College for a non-conference game beginning at 2:00 p.m. That is the last game for Washington before the holiday break. The Shorewomen return in the New Year for two straight non-conference road games: Thursday, Jan. 6 at the College of Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m., and Monday, Jan. 10 at Bryn Mawr College at 6:00 p.m.
