The W.C. women's basketball team played through a challenging winter break, going 1-1 in the Centennial Conference, and 3-2 overall in the past five games.
Junior forward Kate Bierzonski led all scorers and rebounders with 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Washington College women's basketball team to a 75-45 win over the College of Notre Dame. Bierzonski shot 10-for-14 from the floor, and also earned a game and career-high eight steals. It was Bierzonski's second straight double-double, and her fourth overall this season.
The Shorewomen improved to 3-5 overall with their second consecutive victory. The game matched Washington's seventh-year head coach Laneé Cole-Smith with Notre Dame's Scot Reisinger, who is in his first season as head coach of the Gators after spending three years as an assistant under Cole-Smith at Washington College.
With Washington holding on to a slim 19-17 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first half, the Shorewomen broke the game wide open with a 16-0 run over the next five minutes. Washington junior guard Kerry Lomax led the way, scoring all 15 of her points in the opening period. Bierzonski added nine points, while sophomore forward Allyson Britton scored eight.
Washington's Bierzonski took control in the second half, scoring 14 of her 23 points. Her high school and now college teammate, junior guard Daniela Rados, ironically a transfer this season from the College of Notre Dame, added eight points.
Following Bierzonski's performance, Lomax was next with 15 points. Rados added 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Britton finished with eight points and three steals. Sophomore forward Janine Morehead had seven points, seven rebounds, and a career-high three assists. Senior guard Maggy Kilroy dished out a game-high four assists, and also came up with four steals.
The visiting Shorewomen took out Bryn Mawr college in a 67-27 non-conference victory. Bierzonski scored a game-high 18 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the floor, and also had seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. With their third straight win, the Shorewomen improved to 4-5 overall.
Washington jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game, and held a 47-9 advantage at halftime. Bierzonski scored 13 of her 18 points in the opening period. Sophomore forward Allyson Britton had all 10 of her points in that half, while junior guard Dani Rados scored her game total of eight points in the first.
Neither team could find its shooting touch in the second period. The Shorewomen only outscored Bryn Mawr by a narrow 20-18 margin in the second half.
Unfortunately, the Shorewomen fell to visiting Johns Hopkins University a few days later. Bierzonski scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough as her team was defeated 71-49.
With the loss, which snapped a three-game winning streak, the Shorewomen fall to 4-6 on the season and 0-3 in the Centennial. The Blue Jays, currently ranked #18 in the nation, improve to 9-3 overall this year and a perfect 3-0 in the conference with their second straight victory.
Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 34-22 halftime lead. Washington's Bierzonski had 14 of her18 points in the first.
In the second half, the Shorewomen were only down 49-39. Washington would not score again for five minutes, however, shut the door on the hosts.Kilroy had eight points, four rebounds, and a game-high five steals. Kilroy needs just eight steals to break the Washington career record in that category. The current mark is 176, held by Shorewomen assistant coach Diane Zeng '99. Kilroy is already the all-time career assists leader (currently 310).
Against Ursinus, Bierzonski scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and Britton added 20 points and a career and game-high 12 rebounds, to lead the team to a 71-60 Centennial Conference victory on Saturday. The double-double was the fifth this year for Bierzonski, who shot 10-for-18 from the floor. It was Britton's first double-double of the year. She shot 5-for-11 overall, and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
Monday evening, the visiting Shorewomen fell to host Widener University in non-conference action. Sophomore guard Lauren Potchak scored a game-high 22 points to help the host Widener University women's basketball team to a 89-64 wing. After Washington scored the first four points of the game, the Pioneers went on to take a 10-4 lead. Widener led by as much as 13 points midway through the first half, but the Shorewomen cut it to three, 36-33, with 3:11 remaining before the intermission. The hosts went on a 13-1 run to close out the opening period, however, and Widener held a 49-34 advantage at halftime.
Widener used a six-minute, 25-0 run early in the second half to shut the door on the Shorewomen. The Pioneers were ahead 83-44 with 11:02 left in the contest. Washington ended up outscoring the hosts from there, 20-6.
Rados led Washington in scoring with 21 points, and also grabbed five rebounds. Morehead finished with 11 points, on 4-of-9 shooting, plus a career and game-high 13 rebounds.
The Shorewomen, 1-3 in the Centennial Conference, will look to improve on that record Saturday, taking on Haverford College in another Centennial contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
