Last Saturday, Gettysburg College traveled to the Eastern Shore to play against the Shorewomen. As of then, the Bullets were ranked 10th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. Gettysburg's leading scorer, sophomore Becky Bucha scored six goals and added an assist to help bring her team to a 14-7 victory.
The Shorewomen were actually the first to score in the game with the help of senior midfielder Maggy Kilroy. She scored a goal within a minute into the game, on her own. The Bullets were soon to follow to bring the score to a 1-1 tie. The score did not remain tied for long as Bucha brought it 2-1. With 19 minutes left in the half, senior attacker Jordan Holt brought the score to a tie again as she scored an unassisted goal.
The Bullets could tell that the Shorewomen really wanted this game and they knew that they were going to have to step up to continue with there #10 ranking. They quickly scored two back to back goals, which brought the score to 4-2. As 16 minutes remained in the first half, the Shorewomen continued to put up a fight when senior midfielder Linda Fortucci scored off an assist from Holt to bring the score to 4-3. Then the Bullets fought back with another goal and brought the score to 5-3. The Shorewomen were not going to take that so freshman midfielder Paige Heller closed the margin to 5-4. Unfortunately Bucha scored 2 goals before the end of the half to bring the score to 7-4.The Bullets were not going to waste anytime in the second half, scoring with 25 minutes remaining. Following within seconds later, freshman defender Betty Weller scored an unassisted goal, which brought the score to 8-5. Then 5 minutes later, as 20 minutes remained, Holt helped bring the score to 8-6 with her solo goal. Unfortunately the next six goals were awarded to the Bullets and the Shorewomen did not touch the net again until 1 second remained when Kilroy got the last shot to bring the score to 14-7.
The Shorewomen traveled to Franklin and Marshall on April 4th where they got back into their winning streak as the score ended in a close 11-10. Kilroy was not only the lead scorer, but she also scored the winning goal with 13 seconds remaining on the clock!
As this week closes, the Shorewomen are presently 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Diplomats were ranked 19th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll as of Monday.
The Shorewomen started off with a 2-0 lead as Holt and Kilroy both scored a goal. Holt's goal was scored with the help of senior midfielder Christyl Arrabal. Then the Diplomats got ahead by the score of 3-2. Between the next few goals, there were consecutive ties back and fourth.
Washington freshman midfielder Amy Stein scored an unassisted goal to bring the score to 3-3, but F&M scored two goals right after that to bring the score to 5-3. At the end of the half, the Diplomat's scored two goals and Shorewomen's freshman midfielder Tracy Smet scored two consecutive goals, and Kilroy scored a goal right before the break to bring the score to 7-6, with F&M in the lead.
At the start of the new period, there was no action going on in the first 9 minutes. Then F&M scored and were well in the lead by two goals. The Shorewomen got fired up at this point and for the next 8 minutes went on a shooting spree as they scored 4 goals. The scorers were freshman defender Missy Tine, Kilroy, and Holt with two. At this point, Washington led by 2 goals. Franklin and Marshall came back with two goals to tie up the game at 10-10. Then, as 13 seconds remained, Kilroy shot the winning goal.
Said co-captain Rosanne Alastra, "The girls pulled together and never gave up in our win against F & M. If there is one thing that we have learned so early in the season it is that we do our best when we play as a team."
The Shorewomen's next game will be held Saturday, April 8th against Haverford College at 1:00 p.m.start with win over F & M
