Swimming
For what is perhaps the first time in its history, Washington College will have a current student participate in the Olympic Games. Pamela Vasquez, a sophomore from Honduras, will swim for her home country this month in Sydney, Australia. More on Pam will follow in future editions of the Elm.
Field Hockey
The September 2nd game against Frostburg State University that was called because of rain will be made up in its entirety, date and time TBA.
Sailing
The sailing team is busy this weekend, participating in three regattas: the Loyola Open, the Nevins Trophy at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York, and the New York Maritime Open at SUNY-Maritime.
Rowing
For the second straight year, both the men's and women's teams have boats entered in the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, MA, October 21-22. The men will enter in the champion 4 race while the women will enter the champion 8 race. Both teams will face off against some of the toughest competition in the world, including several national teams and the best collegiate teams in the country.
Coaches
Several teams welcome new coaches to the staffs this fall. Linda Fortucci and Sarah Moore, two recent graduates of WC, join Rachel Wilmet, sister of goalie Toby Wilmet, as new field hockey coaches. Jamie Alvarez takes over as head men's rowing coach, while Matt Arkins, another alumnus, will run the novice team. Jessica Sowers joins coach Cole-Smith and the women's basketball team, with Dan MacDuffie joining the men's team as a graduate assistant.
