Last week the Shorewomen took on conference rivals Ursinus College on the road and hosted Bryn Mawr for their home opener.
The defense gave a strong performance against the Ursinus Bears offense, but in the seventy-third minute of the game, Courtney Barth scored for the Bears. Barth's goal was the only goal scored in the game which Ursinus won 1-0.
"We played really well against Ursinus, and we just got unlucky that day. We beat them last year 1-0, so we have about the same skill as Ursinus," said Sophomore Kristen Bozella. "It just comes down to who is playing better on the particular day."
This game was the fourth shutout in five games this season for Ursinus.
Not only does this boost their record up to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, but they also are positioned at the top of the Centennial Conference for the first time in their history. For Washington, Allison LaMarca, Sara Mackeverican, Allison Weisbrod, and Betty Weller all played superb defense. Washington's goalie, senior Quin Bowman, made fourteen saves for the Shorewomen. Bears goalie Erin Cantwell made seven saves
The Shorewomen played their first Centennial game against Bryn Mawr College Wednesday, September 13. Freshman Jen Cox scored two of the goals for Washington, while Mackeverican scored the other goal to help defeat the Mawrters 3-0.
Bozzella said, "It was nice to win our home opener and also to win our first Centennial Conference game because it showed our fans what we have been working for in practices."Cox scored her first goal twenty minutes into the first half on a pass from Mackeverican. Three minutes later, the duo flip-flopped and Mackeverican scored off an assist from Cox. Then in the end of the second half, Cox scored again, this time unassisted.
The Shorewomen kept Bryn Mawr's goalie busy in the net. Their goalkeeper, Sarah Caldwell, made nine saves on the twenty-five shots from the Shorewomen.
