The second floor of Washington College's Cain Athletic Center is about to undergo some major renovations this year. The upstairs, formally an overnight accommodation area for visiting sports teams, is being converted into a set of new offices for coaches of various sport teams.
As it currently stands, the second floor is rarely used. The room was constructed in the 1950s when it was common practice for schools to provide lodging for visiting teams.
"The upstairs looks like military barracks. There are 30 to 40 bunk beds lined up. It's not the most inviting scene in the world," stated Reid Raudenbush, Director of Physical Plant.
The SMG architectural firm has done sketches and will begin devising a plan soon.
Eight to nine offices, as well as a waiting area, will occupy the second floor of the Cain Athletic Center.
Dr. Louis Stettler, Senior Vice President for Finance and Management, stated that the purpose of the project is merely to provide extra office space for the coaches who are currently confined to uncomfortable, unwelcoming offices.
In addition, "We hope to provide a more efficient and attractive office area that will be more presentable to students contemplating on whether or not to attend Washington College," Stettler said.
As time has progressed, the college has found better and more accommodating means of housing visiting sports teams. Hotels are often the best possibility.
The unused area above the gym will soon be transformed into a myriad of offices providing current and prospective students alike with a more welcoming and professional environment in which to meet with their coaches.
