Last week the Shorewomen lost their last two matches of the season against Villa Julie College and Johns Hopkins University.
On Tuesday, October 24, the Shorewomen took on the Mustangs of Villa Julie and were defeated 3-1. Head coach Eleanor Shriver said, "the team played at a very solid level against Villa Julie. They were able to score one goal, which is an improvement over last year's game. It shows me that the team has improved their offense output."
In the first half, the Mustangs scored fifteen minutes into the match.
Neither team scored a goal in the rest of the first half. For the Shorewomen, sophomore Sarah Polhamus scored the team's only goal off an assist from freshman Courtney Riso with 31 minutes left in the game.
Shortly after Polhamus's goal, the Mustangs scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. They also scored an additional point goal with 15 minutes remaining. Senior Quin Bowman made 11 saves in net for the Shorewomen."The biggest change in the team this year is that better friendships have developed, which helps the skill level and teamwork in practices," said Coach Shriver. "The team gets along and they all worked towards one common goal. This season taught us that every second counts in the 90 minute games, and that we have to keep at it and not give up for one second!"
On October 28 the Shorewomen hosted arch-rival Johns Hopkins University.
The Blue Jays shut out the Shorewomen 5-0, earning a Centennial Conference win over Washington. Bowman was in goal again for the Shorewomen and made sixteen saves."It was an interesting game against Hopkins especially with the wind," commented Shriver. "When we were going with the wind, there were chances to score, but when we were against the wind, they held the other team off pretty well, which shows that the defense effort has improved from the beginning to the end of the season."
The game against Hopkins was also Senior Day. The Shorewomen say good-bye to co-captains Niki Dennison and Bowman, as well as two year assistant coach Sue Willard.
The Shorewomen ended the season 8-11 overall. This season also established a numerous amount of team records: Wins in a season (8), Shots on Goal in a Season (278), and Number of Goals Scored in a Season (50).
The 2001 season looks even brighter than this past season. Shriver thinks that next year's team will be even better because "it will be our fourth season and our fourth recruiting class. This means that everyone that is on the field will have been recruited to play soccer here."
