Fire ignites in dorm

Angela Sammons

Caroline and Queen Anne residents were shocked to hear that the fire alarm that awoke them in the early hours of the morning on Monday, December 4, was set off actual fire.

The alarm was triggered by smoke pouring out of the room of senior Jennifer Mullan (QA 216), after a candle that she had lit caught her tapestries on fire.

"The Chestertown Fire department was [immediately] contacted and responded," said Operations Supervisor of Public Safety Walt Beaupre.

Fortunately for everyone involved, "the fire was contained to the room and resulted in minimal damage."

Mullan and her friend, Laura Sauter, were able to put the fire out with water and a fire extinguisher before the fire company even arrived.

"Public Safety and a slew of firemen arrived on the scene, and once they had assessed that the fire was out they called me in to explain," Mullan said. "Needless to say, I am now the poster child for why we are not allowed to have candles in our dorm rooms."

Only her tapestries and binds were damaged in the fire.
