During the past week on campus the recurring question has been "Giants or Ravens?" This Sunday will finally settle that question when the Super Bowl, one of America's most sacred sporting rituals, will take place.
Men in spandex and oversized pads will appear on big screen televisions across the nation while buffalo wings, beer, and chips will be plentiful for devoted fans.
The majority of Washington College students will not be going to the Super Bowl. Instead, they are planning to celebrate with friends and watch the game on television.
Sophomore and Phi Delta Theta member Erik Lund said he plans to attend "a small gathering for fraternity brothers and their friends. We'll be watching the game on a couple of televisions."
Members of Kappa Alpha Order will also be enjoying the game.
Said Junior and Kappa Alpha president Teris Pantazes, "Kappa Alpha and friends will be enjoying this year's annual alumni Super Bowl party by watching the game with some good food and friends. I think it will be a great game ... especially on a fifty inch TV!"
Some WC students are planning to celebrate the Super Bowl off campus.
Jack McCauley said, "We are getting pizza, wings, a keg, and green punch, and having a party off campus."
Junior Anna Mavrellos decided that she was "going to Baltimore to the bars and having a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
While these fans have well planned Super Bowl Sundays in store for them, some are not exactly sure what the day will bring.
Some students may be able to relate to Katie Bernstein who said, "I have no plans yet."
For those who do not already have places to watch the game, the Student Center is sponsoring an all-campus Super Bowl party, even though the Center itself is not yet open.
Director of Student Activities Bob Hooey explained, "The Campus Center and Student Activities Board will be hosting a Super Bowl party in Hynson Lounge from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m."
He added, "There will be food and you can watch the game on a big screen television."
The teams playing in this year's championship game, the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants, both have devout fans at WC.
Many students cannot agree on who should win.
Even those who are not huge football fans feel obligated to choose a favorite team. Some have decided to root for the team based closest to their hometowns.
Freshman Dawn Taute said she wanted the Giants to win because "I'm a New Yorker at heart even though I am from New Jersey."
Taute plans on having a "Giants-kick-Raven-a--" party in her room.
Mavrellos said, "I'm a Baltimore native. Of course I'm cheering for the Ravens."
A few students must cheer for teams to which they are not loyal. One student explained, "I'd rather see the Ravens win, but I am an Eagles fan."
Freshman Bill Burger is siding with the Giants.
He explained, "As a New Yorker, I'll be rooting for the Giants, even though they are based in New Jersey."
Others are not concerned with who wins. An anonymous student explained, "I'm not much of a sports fan. I'm just watching the game but not rooting for anyone."
Burger, who is not a major fan of the sport either, explained that he would be watching the game because "the Super Bowl brings fans of all sports together to watch. It is the ultimate day in sporting events. It unites all sports."
Kick-off for the Super Bowl will be at 6 p.m. January 28.
