Men's and women's swimming continue domination

Natalie Liccketto

The Washington College men's and women's swimming teams took on St. Mary's College and Dickinson College this past week. On January 19, the men's team won 111-77 while the women's team won 152-52, taking all 11 first place finishes against St. Mary's.

John Evans continues to have a solid freshman year. He earned three more wins against St. Mary's. He finished the 1000-yard freestyle, with a time of 10:48.06, the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:02.66, and the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:11.32. Ryan Staszak also aided the Shoremen by winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.47 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.11. He then proceeded to lead the relay team of Dwayne Yerger, Alex Kuhn, and JC Cronin to victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

As the women of the Washington College Swimming Team continue their steady season, a strong sophomore class helps lead the team. Sophomores Sarah Cooper, Pamela Vasquez, and Stacy Sines were all triple event winners.

All three were members of the 200-yard freestyle relay team who, along with Lindsey Summers, were victorious with a time of 1:46.64. Cooper also captured the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.33. She then led the team of Vanessa Makarewicz, Margaret Klag, and Summers to a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Along with the relay win Sines also swam to individual wins in both the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Vasquez continued her strong season by capturing the 1000-yard freestyle title in 11:05.47 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.75. Another individual winner was sophomore Rebecca Sirman in the 400-yard IM with a time of 5:04.59. Carolyn Myers came up big in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:25.04 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:33.81. Klag continued her solid year in the breaststroke by capturing the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.08.

Last Saturday, January 27, the Shoremen and women met up with Dickinson.

The men swam a strong meet, winning seven of 11 races. Unfortunately, they were unable to hold off Dickinson in the final relay. The men's team lost the meet 107.5-94.5.

Staszak led the Shoremen with wins in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 22.03, and the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 49.97. In addition to the performance by Staszak, senior Rob Savidge also turned in a win.

JC Cronin won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.27. Ryan Behles came from behind to win the 200-yard butterfly in 2:13.48. Evans scored a win in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.74. Kuhn won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.92. Despite the tremendous effort put forth by the men's team, they fell short to Dickinson in the final relay.

For the women, Sines, Cooper, and Vasquez led the Shorewomen, each capturing three events. Sines claimed a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:56.52. She also had a strong performance in the 500 freestyle, winning 5:15.52. Sines and Cooper, along with Makarewicz and Klag, began the meet by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a season best time of 4:11.70. After anchoring the medley relay, Cooper went on to claim an impressive come-from-behind victory in the 200-yard IM and a close win in the 100-yard freestyle. Vasquez had yet another good day, winning both the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:52.31 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.94. She then closed out the meet by leading the team of Makarewicz, Summers, and Sara Hardy to a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

At the end of the week the men's team overall record stands at 6-3 and the women are strong at 9-1.

Both teams look to garner another win in their next upcoming meet. They host Centennial Conference opponent Western Maryland College tomorrow, February 3, in the Casey Swim Center at 1 p.m.
