Men's basketball just falls short of playoffs

Stephanie Fowler

The 2000-2001 season came to an end for the Washington College men's basketball team last Saturday when Ursinus College knocked them out of a play-off spot by winning their final game of the regular season. Nevertheless, the Shoremen fought hard to the very end, defeating both Haverford and Western Maryland.

On Valentine's Day, the Shoremen delivered a knockout punch to the Fords of Haverford. Going into the locker room at the half, Washington was ahead of Haverford 33-19.

The seniors led the charge. Greg Adams had a team high 31 points, while classmate Alhamisi Simms had the team high nine rebounds. Simms also dropped 13 points, had five assists, and had three steals. Co-captain Antoine Bellin chipped in with 12 points.

Washington continued their shooting spree and the Fords increased their effort, but it was not enough to overcome the 21 point deficit. The Shoremen easily won the Centennial Conference match-up, 74-53.

In order to see play-off action, WC needed Muhlenberg to defeat Ursinus.

If the Mules won, then the Shoremen would face Ursinus in a tie-breaking game to see who would advance to the playoffs.

Last Saturday, the Shoremen matched-up with Western Maryland in their last Centennial Conference game of the season. The Shoremen's defense devoured the Green Terror's offense and caused ten turnovers. These turnovers were transformed into big points for the Shoremen offense. Western Maryland never fully recovered - they shot 8-for-30 from the field. At the half, WC led 46-34.

Adams led the Shoremen shooting squad with 34 points and went 10-for-15 from the free throw line. Senior co-captain Earl Piner scored 23 points.

This was the final career game for Adams, Bellin, Piner, Simms, and Will Adelsberger.

Unfortunately, Ursinus defeated Muhlenberg in overtime play and ended the season for WC. The Shoremen finished their season 13-11 overall and 6-7 in the Centennial Conference under Coach Michael Hart. The team will return six players for the 2001-2001 campaign, and are looking towards a stacked recruit class for the years to come.
