Player of the Week: Kerry Lomax

Katie Bierzonski

This week's featured athlete is a senior with a solid career in Cain Gym that ended Saturday, February 17. The co-captain of the Shorewomen basketball team, Kerry Lomax, had a great four years on the hardwood.

Lomax scored 669 points over her four years for a career average of 7.1 ppg. She also handed out 199 assists during her career. She has shot 73.9% from the free throw line in her career. Lomax is a hard-working, intense competitor at both ends of the court and amassed 147 steals in her career.

Lomax is continually asked to defend the opposing team's top scorer, and she shuts them down consistently. Showing determination and dedication over her career, Kerry Elizabeth Lomax is The Elm's Player of the Week.

On her senior day this past Saturday, Lomax put in a stellar parting performance in the team's exciting win over Western Maryland 101-98 in triple overtime. This was the first time the Shorewomen had scored over 100 points, having scored 97 twice in their history. Lomax had a game-high nine assists and four steals along with five points and six boards as she played 50 of the 55 minutes. Far from tears after such an emotionally exhausting victory, Lomax described the win as "the best possible way to finish [her career] at Washington College."

Head Coach Lanee "We are stopping for coffee" Cole-Smith has a deep respect for #32: "Kerry has played four good years of basketball for the Shorewomen. She is a great team leader who is always accountable and unselfishly willing to give her all on both ends of the court." Karen "Tight" Simos agrees with her coach about Lomax's work ethic: "Kerry is always staying positive and works 110% all the time, no matter if we are losing or not." Lomax is often the first player on the court at practice and has high standards for herself on the court, working this year to decrease her number of turnovers, which she successfully accomplished.

This Shorewomen team has reached several milestones this year. They tied the record for most points scored in a game in a match versus Bryn Mawr, tallying 97 points on their home floor, then broke that record versus Western Maryland February 17. They are third ranked nationally in field goal percentage against; showing that they force their opponents to take difficult shots. The team won second place in the Goombay Shootout and made it home with a giant conch shell trophy from the Bahamas despite flight cancellations and delays. The third player in WC history reached the 1,000 point plateau this season, and freshmen Katie Piringer broke the record for three-pointers in a season, having currently made 42 with two games left in the 2000-2001 season. Lomax gave a nod to her young teammate Piringer, "I am really proud of Katie, she is a great shooter and breaking the season 3 point record is a wonderful way for her to start her career."

Lomax is not only an athlete but a scholar who made the Dean's List last semester. She volunteers at Garnett Middle School as part of the "Character Counts" program, writes for the Business Department Newsletter, is on the SGA Student Academic Board, and works in the Sports Information Office.

Her supervisor, Sports Information Director Lou Noce, describes Lomax work there as timely and responsible, "Kerry had been integral part of SID office this year, working in all facets of the office. She will make an excellent addition to our profession." Lomax's plans are to become a graduate assistant in sports information next year. She attended Manasquan High School in Manasquan, New Jersey, which boasts some of the best surfing on the Jersey Shore. Best of luck to her in the conclusion of her senior season and senior year, and in all her future plans.
