The Washington College women's lacrosse team opens their season tomorrow when they host Goucher at 1 p.m.
Eleanor Shriver is entering her fourth year as Head Coach, along with her fourth year assistant coach, Ken Noble. Leslie Khachadourian joins the coaching staff this year as another assistant.
This year, the Shorewomen will be following up the most successful season in Washington's history. The Shorewomen had a record of 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference last year. In 2000, the Shorewomen hosted the 2000 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Championships, where they went all the way to the finals of the tournament before falling to Ithaca College, 8-5.
The team this year has a lot of young talent. Niki Dennison is the only senior on the team. Classmates Pam Badaar and Robin Necker are juniors.
The majority of the players are freshmen and sophomores, but they still look to be making a big impact in helping the team be competitive in the Conference, and to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
In goal, two talented freshmen, Johanna McCormick and Lindsey Wolfe, will be fighting for playing time. Necker returns to play defense. Last season she had 22 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Two freshmen, Elaine Knowles and Erin Alessi, are also expected to be a big help on the defensive field along with Necker.
In the midfield, the Shorewomen have a key returnee in sophomore Amy Stein. Stein is a versatile player and is able to play both midfield and defense. She previously led the Shorewomen with 23 turnovers caused last season, and she also returns with the highest number of ground-balls, 46.
Along with Stein, sophomores Betty Weller and Missy Tine will be returning.
Weller is one of Washington's leading returning point scorers from the 2000 season. She scored 17 goals and recorded seven assists. Tine is the leading returnee in draw controls with 25.Joining this experienced midfield are freshmen Elizabeth Dowell and Shannon Hanley, who both are expected to make an impact as well.
On attack, the Shorewomen have a pair of returning sophomores who could end up being major scoring threats. Tracy Smet is the leading returning goal scorer and finished last year with 18 goals and four assists. Kristen Bozzella recorded 12 goals last year and two assists. She also had 28 ground balls, 10 turnovers, and 17 draw controls.
Sophomore Paige Heller is also a returning attacker. In 2000, Heller finished with six goals and seven assists. Joining the attackers is freshman Tracy Lynch, who has been working hard in practice to contribute as much as possible.
Goucher will be a tough first opponent for the Shorewomen tomorrow.
