Men's lacrosse falls to 2-3 over break, ranked #8

Natalie Liccketto

While most of the spring sports teams of Washington College headed to Florida for spring break, the WC men's lacrosse team stayed in Chestertown to play games against Nazareth, Skidmore, and Roanoke.

Saturday, March 10 the men faced Nazareth College who are ranked fifth in Division III. The men suffered the first of their spring break losses to Nazareth by a score of 8-4. The men also fell to Roanoke College later that week, in a very tight and intense game, 12-11.

The Shoremen did capture an impressive victory over Skidmore College, winning the game 18-11.

In their game against Nazareth College, the Shoremen played a strong game until Nazareth exploded late in the third quarter. Nazareth scored four straight goals over the last four minutes of the third quarter to snap a 4-4 tie.

This was the first win for #5 Nazareth (1-0). They obtained this victory under the direction of first-year coach Rob Randall, who replaced Scott Nelson last fall.

Craig Rentch scored just 12 seconds into the game to give Washington an early 1-0 lead. Nazareth then used two goals each from Eric Goodberlet and Al Terilli to take a 4-1 advantage. Nazareth led 4-2 at halftime. Washington tied the score, 4-4, on extra-man goals by Rentch and Steve Berger early in the third quarter. Nazareth regained the lead with four straight goals, including three in the last 53 seconds of the third quarter. Senior attackman Jim Cianfrocca scored the go-ahead goal off a pass from junior midfielder P.J. Rosecrans. Junior attackmen Avery Burke and Josh Lewis scored next.

Finally, Cianfrocca closed out the scoring with just :04 left in the quarter off a pass from defenseman Ethan Sleeman. Senior Rob Carroll made nine saves in his first start for the Golden Flyers in goal. Washington's John Chrismer had 13 saves.

The Shoremen came back from their two-game losing skid by defeating Skidmore College (NY) 18-11, in Chestertown, Wednesday, March 14. The Shoremen got the offensive burst they needed from sophomore Eric Kuehn. Kuehn led the Washington attack with five goals and one assist. The Shoremen needed this offensive outburst, as they had only managed six goals in their previous two games. Washington jumped out early scoring the first two goals of the games. Both goals came from the stick of Kuehn. Skidmore re-grouped, scoring the next three goals in the first quarter, leading the Shoremen after the first quarter, 3-2.

The game remained close, with both teams trading leads in the second quarter. Jon Fellows scored back-to-back goals at the end of the second quarter, putting the Shoremen up 9-5. The Shoremen took this lead and ran with it. Skidmore opened the fourth quarter with an illegal stick violation.

Washington capitalized scoring three straight man-up goals on the 3:00 penalty.

Fellows finished the game with four goals. Senior Nick Nylund added four goals in the win.

After their impressive defeat over Skidmore College the Washington College (2-3) men's lacrosse team was stunned by Roanoke College (3-1), 12-11, on Saturday, March 17.

Sophomore midfielder Joe Weeren scored the game-winner for Roanoke with 2:52 left in the fourth quarter to break the 11-11 tie. Washington peppered the Roanoke goal in the final moments, but could not score the equalizer.

The win was the sixth all-time for Roanoke over Washington College. The Shoremen lead the all-time series 17-6.

Roanoke last beat Washington in 1998. The loss marks the third time this season that Washington College has fallen to a nationally ranked opponent.

The Shoremen fought hard and the game was tight throughout, with the Maroons holding a slim 7-6 lead at the half. Washington seemed to pull away in the third, scoring four goals.

Rentch scored at the 12:40 mark of the third to tie the game at seven all. Nylund followed with one of his three goals at the 12:24 mark. Kuehn and Berger rounded out the third quarter scoring for the Shoremen. At the start of the fourth, the score was 10-8 in favor of Washington. The Shoremen seemed poised to take control of the game. Roanoke chipped away at the Shoremen lead. The first goal came at the 13:55 mark, from the stick of Garrett Yaralian.

The Maroons then went ahead on a goal by Kris Davis with 11:03 left in the game. Nylund tallied his third goal, and tied the game for Washington at 11.

The game remained deadlocked, until Weeren tossed in game winner with 2:52 left; Ryan Kamerdin assisted him. Washington pressured the final Roanoke goal in the final moments, but Maroon goalie Tim Morse turned away the Shoremen rush. He finished the day with 12 saves.

Washington College is ranked eighth in the latest USILA/STX Division III national poll. Roanoke was ranked 13th.

The Shoremen host non-conference rival Limestone College tomorrow, at 1 p.m.
