Men's lacrosse stunned by Western Maryland 15-14

Natalie Liccketto

The Washington College men's lacrosse team earned its first Centennial Conference win of the season with a 16-5 victory over Dickinson College Saturday, March 31. The Shoremen also came up big in their Conference game against Franklin & Marshall College this past Saturday, April 7. The team suffered one defeat in the midst of their victories. They fell in a lacrosse thriller to Western Maryland on the turf of the Green Terror Wednesday, April 4. Despite the loss, the game was played tremendously well until the final moments.

In their first conference victory against Dickinson College the Shoremen scored eight goals in the first quarter to put the Devils away early. Junior Craig Rentch led all WC scorers with there goals. Senior Dan Meehan added two goals and three assists while Sophomore Eric Kuehn dumped in two goals as well. Junior John Chrismer and sophomore Jesse Markowitz teamed up in net for the win. Markowitz turned away seven shots in just one quarter of play. Offensively, the Shoremen put pressure on the Red Devil net by out-shooting Dickinson 44-19. Andrew Theodorakis saved 10 shots in the Dickinson cage.

Traveling for the first time since March, the Shoremen fell to Western Maryland College in an intense Conference match-up. The Green Terror rallied from five goals down to come back and beat Washington College, 15-14.

Goalkeeper Brian Nottingham made just one save in the fourth quarter, but it was the one that saved the game for the Green Terror. He rejected Washington's Steve Berger with only 18 seconds remaining. Western Maryland, ranked #24, erupted in celebration as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

The win was one of the biggest ever over the nation's # 13 team.

Washington dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Shoremen got a pair of first-quarter goals from freshman Michael Dyal. Western Maryland's offense came to life slightly in the second quarter. Leading scorer Tom Brown found the back of the net four times in the second, providing the upward momentum of the Green Terror. Washington, however, responded each time, scoring four goals of its own to bring the score to 8-4 at halftime.

The Shoremen then opened the second-half scoring with a goal from John Fellows just 32 seconds into the third quarter. Down five goals, the Green Terror exploded with a binge of seven unanswered goals. Five different Western Maryland players hit the jackpot in the spree, including two from Joe Ellis and All-American Brett Sweeney. After three quarters of play, Western Maryland held a 12-10 edge.

The Shoremen out-scored Western Maryland 4-3 in the final frame, including two goals by Kuehn. The Green Terror got a clutch fourth-quarter score at 6:19 from sophomore Scott Stolzenberg, who notched just his second collegiate goal. Ellis's goal with 2:05 remaining proved to be the game winner for Western Maryland, which had to hold off Washington's late-game heroics.

The Green Terror victory was the first over the Shoremen in 24 games, dating back to April 23, 1932.

Saturday April 7, the Shoremen came back from their loss to Western Maryland to grab a win against #16 Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats fell to #13 Washington College in a 15-11 comeback victory for the Shoremen. Berger and Kuehn paced the Washington scoring front.

The final four minutes would be all Shoremen, as the Washington offense controlled the ball for all but 12 seconds as they beat the Diplomat defense for four goals in 2:53 to take the win.

The game-winner would come with just under three minutes to play as Nick Nylund would fire a shot, get his own rebound, circle the net and find a streaking Rentch for a point blank shot into the upper 90s for the deciding goal. Berger, Meehan, and Kuehn would tack on scores in the last two minutes.

Berger and Kuehn each scored four goals while Fellows, Nyland, and Rentch each scored twice.

Chrismer made nine saves in the win. The Shoremen outshot the Diplomats 39-30 though lost the ground ball battle 44-36.

The Shoremen travel to Gettysburg, PA tomorrow for a key match-up against the Gettysburg Bullets. Currently, the Bullets are in first place in the Centennial Conference with a 3-0 record. The Shoremen and Green Terror are tied in second with records of 2-1. A win in Gettysburg will bring the Shoremen another conference championship.

That would then give the Shoremen the opportunity to play for the Division III NCAA Championship.
