To be an athletic winner is an accomplishment. To be an academic achiever is an accomplishment. To be an Academic All-American is nothing short of amazing.
Sophomore swimmer John Evans received this honor after earning a 4.0 grade-point average after his freshman year. To qualify for this award, an athlete must be an NCAA qualifier and carry at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
Evans summed up his achievements by saying, "It's not so much a question of dedication. I look at swimming as something to do on the side. I'm here to learn every practice is like a class, every dual meet is like a quiz, and then championships is our final exam."
The success Evans had during his freshman year in the classroom carried into his rookie swimming season. Evans placed seventh at the NCAA's in the 200 breaststroke, and earned three gold medals at the Centennial Championships.
Three conference records were broken by his performance and he also picked up the Centennial Conference's Outstanding Male Swimmer award along the way.
"I couldn't have accomplished all that I did without the moral support of my teammates," added Evans.
Notably so, Evans was not the only member of the swim team to be successful in the classroom. The entire team was also the recipient of an Academic All-American team award with a 3.23 cumulative grade-point average. That award was the 12th won by the Washington College Swim program.
