Freshman outside hitter Laura Greenback was named to the All-Tournament team at the Dickinson College Invitational, where the Washington College volleyball team opened its 2001 season last weekend.
The Shorewomen lost all five matches they played, but managed to take two games on that day; one against Albright and the other against Notre Dame (MD).
In the first match of the season, the Shorewomen host Dickinson College.
Junior middle hitter Katie Froning recorded 11 digs, while Greenback added 10. Junior defensive specialist J.J. Jump served five aces as the Shorewomen took the Red Devils to the wire in each game (32-30, 31-29, 32-30), but unfortunately lost 3-0.
Next up for the Shorewomen was Alvernia College.
Greenback was big again as she tallied eight kills on 14 attempts. Jump notched 11 digs, and junior setter Amy Milauskas chipped in with 23 assists in the hard fought loss. Alvernia defeated the Shorewomen 3-0, (30-26, 30-28, 30-11).
On the second day of the tournament, the Shorewomen had new life and a second chance to pick up a few games and some momentum for the remainder of the season. Their first foe of the day was Lebanon Valley.
Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Pyzik recorded ten digs and junior middle hitter Beka Beckett notched three solo blocks and assisted on two others. Again, their efforts were not enough as Lebanon Valley edged out the Shorewomen 3-0 (30-16, 30-18, 30-19).
Greenback drove home 12 kills on 15 attempts and added 18 digs as the Shorewomen took their first game of the Tournament against Albright College. Froning contributed six solo blocks, while Milauskas offered up 36 assists, but the Shorewomen dropped the match, 3-1 (30-18, 27-30, 30-28, 30-21).
Jump had a solid match against Notre Dame (MD), chalking up 12 kills on 14 attempts and notching 23 digs. Froning added five more solo blocks and assisted on three others, while Milauskas contributed 33 assists with another big game. Notre Dame had the day though when the game was done, as they too defeated the Shorewomen 3-1 (23-30, 30-23, 30-20, 30-24).
Though the Shorewomen have started their season at 0-5, there were many good signs for the future. "We played real well as a team and I only see us improving as the year goes on," said Beckett.
The team travels to Pennsylvania this weekend for the annual Gettysburg Tournament.
