Heading into their fourth year, the women's soccer team this year is looking strong. The Shorewomen ended last season with an 8-11 record overall and were 2-8 in the Centennial Conference. Last season the team had a record 8 wins, took 278 shots, and made 50 goals.
"The women's soccer team has come so far in 4 years," says Coach Eleanor Shriver. "this year's squad boasts the first seniors of the program's history."
This year's team -- consisting of returning players Mandy Higdon, Betty Weller, Sarah Polhamus, Kerry O'Keefe, Erin Alessi, Kelly McClure, Allison Weisbrod, Sara Mackeverican, Samantha Hunt, Allison LaMarca, Amanda Skilling, Julia Myers and Marissa Smithson, as well as eleven freshmen -- should make this a great season for the Shorewomen. This season's captains are O'Keefe and Weisbrod.
Coach Shriver is pleased about the way that the team has begun to gel. They are working towards developing a solid working relationship on the field and fast friendships off the field; both of which will combine for a productive and winning season.
The Shorewomen are playing a competitive schedule this season. They kicked off the season on Saturday when they faced the host team in the University of Scranton Invitational Tournament. The Shorewomen fell to Scranton 5-0 in their first game of the season. This game was highlighted for the Shorewomen by sophomore goalkeeper Mandy Higdon who made 20 saves.
Three of the five Scranton goals were scored by freshman Sara Suchoski including the first of the game at the 20:58 mark.
Following the first-round loss the Shorewomen went on to play Villa Julie in the consolation game of the four-team tournament. The Shorewomen played to a 0-0 double overtime draw against Villa Julie. The two teams played a total of 120 minutes without a goal.
"We really brought it together as a team in the Villa Julie game," commented Higdon. "Everybody gave it all they had during those 120 minutes of soccer.
Villa Julie slightly led the Shorewomen in shots on goal, 19-16, while both teams managed three corner kicks. Freshman forward Jordan Rogers took five of the Shorewomen's shots and junior defender Betty Weller attempted three.
In goal, Higdon made 14 saves and recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career.
The tie, the first in Washington College women's soccer history, means that Washington and Villa Julie share third place in the tournament.
The Shorewomen, currently 0-1-1 in the season, are next in action today when they host Stevens Tech at 4 p.m.
