The Washington College men's soccer team opened its home season with their second overtime contest in three games on September 5.
The Shoremen hosted Cabrini College. The draw marked the second time in three games this season that the Shoremen (0-2-1) played extra minutes.
Washington seeks to improve their record as the Centennial Conference schedule will soon begin. Tomorrow, they play host to Gettysburg College, the team that defeated them last season in the ECAC's.
In the grueling match against Cabrini, the Shoremen played a long and hard fought game. Cabrini, with a 1-0 record, struck first in the game when sophomore back Jason Catagnus found the right corner of the WC goal after receiving a pass from senior forward Michael Braun at the 13 minute mark.
The Shoremen evened the score at one at the end of the first half when senior midfielder Chris Hastings scored off a cross from junior midfielder T.J. Velykis.
The Cavaliers then re-took the lead again in the second half when junior forward Michael Rennie scored on a penalty kick
Once again, the Shoremen evened the score less than four minutes later as Hastings crossed the ball to a waiting Velykis fora much needed goal. The Shoremen appeared to have taken control of the game at the 88:43 mark when freshman Kyle Woodford scored on a pass from freshman Dave Dudick. Unfortunately, Catagnus tied the game for good with an unassisted goal only 30 seconds later at 89:20.
The Shoremen went on to sudden death overtime play with the Cavaliers. The outcome of both halves of overtime was scoreless and the game ended in a draw.
Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Miller made five saves in net for the Shoremen while Cabrini's James Beck made three. Both keepers played all 120 minutes.
As of now Hastings and Velykis are tied for the team lead in goals with two. Hastings also leads the team in assists, with two, which makes him the overall team leader in points, with six.
Cabrini College held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal, while the Shoremen held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Shoremen look to continue to progress into their season as they prepare for their upcoming game against Gettysburg.
