Field Hockey extends winning streak to three

Matthew Edwards

After Wednesday's game versus Villa Julie was postponed due to last week's tragic events, Washington looked to improve its overall record Saturday in their home game against the Dickinson Red Devils.

WC dominated play in the conference game, winning 4-1. With that win, the Shorewomen are now 4-2 overall and undefeated thus far in conference play (2-0).

The Shorewomen also sit atop the conference in the early part of the season with a half game lead over Western Maryland and Johns Hopkins (1-0).

Dickinson fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Just 40 seconds into the first half, junior back Megan Daily scored what would be the game-winning goal off a pass from sophomore forward Erin Thomas.

Less than nine minutes later, a pass from sophomore forward Taneil Sisco found freshman midfielder/forward Laura Scimeca, who scored the Shorewomen's second goal. In less than ten minutes, Washington had equaled the number of goals allowed by Dickinson in the Red Devils' first four games.

The Shorewomen would push the lead to three when Daily scored her second goal of the game with 12 minutes to go in the half. Junior midfielder Julie Phillips set up the play and earned the assist on the goal.

The Red Devils cut into the Shorewomen's lead with 9:38 left before the break, when freshman midfielder Emily Greenlee's shot reached the back of the WC goal. Greenlee's goal would be the first and last goal scored by Dickinson all afternoon.

Phillips scored her fifth goal of the season and the only goal of the second half, by either squad, off an assist from Daily. Phillips now leads the Shorewomen in all major offensive categories: goals, assists (three) and total points (13).

The win avenged last season's 1-0 loss to the Red Devils. Washington dominated the game in shot attempts with 20 to Dickinson's six.

The Shorewomen also edged the Red Devils in corners, 12 to nine.

Goalkeeper Christie Allebach posted four saves in the contest to earn her fourth win of the season. Her goals against average now is a meager 1.30. WC is scoring an average of 2.44 goals against their competitors.

Daily was named Centennial Conference player of the week for her efforts versus Dickinson. She is currently second on the team in assists (2), third in goals (3), third in points (8), and leads the team in defensive saves (2). She is also the first Washington athlete to take home Player of the Week honors this season.

The Shorewomen next take the field tomorrow when they will travel to Muhlenberg to take on the Mules in another Centennial Conference matchup.

Face-off is at 1 p.m.
