Volleyball continues to struggle

Michael Coppola

Last weekend, the Washington College Volleyball team traveled to Pomona, NJ to take part in the annual Richard Stockton Invitational.

The Shorewomen faced off against the host Ospreys, as well as Elmira College (NY).

The Shorewomen played a hard fought game against Richard Stockton, but lost the match 3-0 (30-18, 30-18 and 30-22).

Next, the Shorewomen took on Elmira.

Elmira made quick work of the Shorewomen winning 3-0 as well, 30-14, 30-4, 30-14.

One bright moment of the tournament for the Shorewomen was the naming of junior hitter Katie Froning to the All-Tournament team.

Froning played an excellent game against Stockton, ending up with eight kills, two solo blocks and two aces which added to her great, overall tournament performance.

Captain and junior setter Amy Milauskas chipped in with 15 assists, while freshman outside hitter Laura Greenspan played very well and ended the game with a team high eight digs against the Ospreys.

In their second battle, Froning shined once again with three digs, leading the team, while sophomore outside hitter Theresa Pyzik served a pair of aces.

The Shorewomen "have to end their games with the same intensity that they begin them with," according to sophomore hitter Lindsey Tegeler. "If this is accomplished, they can come out with some big wins." She feels the team is "headed for an upswing."

"The team is definitely more intense than last year, but we need to keep up the communication on the court and win some games," added Milauskas.

The Shorewomen are next in action today and tomorrow as they host their annual Washington College Invitational Tournament.

"Right now we are sitting on a fence and need to simply take the step over it," commented Milauskas. The team hopes to begin that process tonight.
