Last week, the Washington College Women's Soccer team took on non-conference teams Wesley and Catholic, and conference opponent Gettysburg College hoping to pick up their third win of the 2001 season.
On October 2, Washington faced Wesley. The game remained scoreless throughout the first half of play. After over 58 minutes of scoreless soccer sophomore back Sara Mackeverican found the upper left corner of the Wesley goal off of an assist from freshman back Amy Bromwell to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
This was Mackeverican's fifth goal in the last five games. Mackeverican's goal was the only goal of the contest and gave Washington their first-ever victory over the Wolverines. "We played well as a team against Wesley," commented Head Coach Eleanor Shriver. "We scored a great goal and defended well to preserve the win."
On both sides the goalkeeper played well. Wolverine junior Christine Holmes made seventeen saves, while Washington goalkeeper Mandy Higdon made nine and recorded the second shutout of her collegiate career. Washington held an 18-9 advantage in shots on goal while Wesley held an edge over the Shorewomen in corner kicks, 5-3.
Following the victory, the Shorewomen faced the Cardinals of Catholic in a non-conference game. The Shorewomen hoped to pick up their second win in a row, but they fell to Catholic in a close match-up, 2-1.
Washington struck first with an unassisted goal by junior midfielder/forward Sarah Polhamus that bounced over the keeper's head into the back of the net at the 21:28 mark. Catholic tied it up when freshman midfielder Amanda Griffiths scored off a rebound at 39:29. The Cardinals then scored the game winner at 70:53 when sophomore back Kellie Falvey scored off of an assist from Griffiths.
In the game against Catholic, "we had moments of great team work, but also moments where we forgot to mark defensively," said Shriver. Higdon made nine saves for the Shorewomen in the loss. Catholic led the Shorewomen, 15-10, in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner kicks.
On October 6, the Shorewomen traveled to Pennsylvania where they fell to Gettysburg College, 7-1, in a Centennial Conference game. Freshman midfielder Jenny Line scored an unassisted goal ten minutes into the game to give Gettysburg the early lead. Freshman forward Jordan Rogers scored Washington's only goal of the game to tie it up at one each off an assist from senior forward Kerry O'Keefe at 18:38.
Gettysburg struck next at the 23 minute mark to take the 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Kristen Salmond tallied the goal off of an assist from junior midfielder Ashley Froman. The Bullets cushioned their lead when they quickly got off four goals at the beginning of the second half of play. Then, with just two minutes left Gettysburg scored their final goal of the game to win 7-1.
Gettysburg held a significant lead in shots on goal 29-3, and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. The Shorewomen's record is currently 3-8-2 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
Tomorrow the ladies are in action again when they travel to take on F&M at noon.
