Spotlight on men's lacrosse captains

The Washington College men's lacrosse team is currently ranked eighth in the Division III schools by the Lacrosse Magazine, which came out on January 18. This is a two spot improvement from their last ranking on December 18 by the coaches' poll from Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook.

Senior Brad Hopkins earned Preseason All-American honorable mention status as a face-off man. Hopkins won 184 (54.8 percent) of his face-offs last season and looks to better that number, if possible. Hopkins shows his leadership both on the field as well as in the locker room where a lot of action takes place.

"Our schedule and level of expectation make being a captain in this program a very difficult task since both the coaches and fellow players expect a lot out of them," said Head Coach JB Clark. "These three have taken on a huge responsibility, but are doing so with tremendous enthusiasm."

Entering his fourth and final season for the Shoremen, Rentch returns to the team as the leading scorer from the 2001 campaign. Rentch netted 45 goals and totaled 56 points en route to the Shoremen's 9-8 overall record.

His efforts last season have earned Rentch a preseason honor of possibly earning All-American honors at the end of the coming season.

Rentch, who was tabbed as a third-team Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook, made Lacrosse Magazine's list of "Others to Watch." Lacrosse Magazine selected a Preseason All-American team consisting of 12 players and included five more players as "Others to Watch."

The youngest of the three captains, Shannon is also a defensive minded player. As Hokins and Rentch tally goals and assists, it is Shannon's job, as well as his fellow defensemen, to resist shots and possible goals heading towards their goalie, John Chrismer.

Shannon is a quiet leader, one who does not need to yell and scream to get his teammates' attention. His play speaks for itself, though he is not afraid to tell you if you are doing something wrong. In return, he will always compliment his teammate when they make the big play.

Come check the captains and the rest of the team in action as they play Widener in a home game on February 23 at 1:30 p.m. Last year, the Shoremen were victorious 12-8. This year, the same result should be seen.
