On campuses across the nation ...

Rachel Brand

Alcohol is a large part of college life in the United States. Drinking more alcohol than a whale can swallow is often the goal of college students.

Texas A&M's school paper The Battalion recently released an article that described the results of a student survey given in 1998. The survey indicated that 73 percent of male students and 71 percent of female students at the university were consuming alcohol.

Michael Wagner, a student at A&M, recently died of alcohol poisoning on his twenty-first birthday. His story, as well as tips on safe drinking, can be read on birthday cards that are sent out to A&M students when they turn twenty-one. The cards are sponsored by the parents of Michael Wagner.

Texas A&M recently passed a rule that stipulates that on-campus residents are no longer permitted to store alcohol in the dormitories if they reside with someone under-age.

Washington and Lee in Lexington, Virginia is one of many schools to begin a "Live Drive" program, which gives students sober rides home. "Live Drive" operates on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, since these are "party nights" at W&L.

School organizations at W&L are required to produce volunteers to drive the "Live Drive" vans. Two cell phones are used for these drivers to communicate with students who are not able to drive home safely.

Utah's Weber State University and the University of Utah do not create programs promoting safe drinking since they are dry campuses. These schools are, however, lifting their alcohol bans for private parties during the Olympics. There is no need to be overly-concerned over students getting drunk and out of control during that time since the parties will only be thrown for guests of these universities.

University of Utah's alumni house will hold kegs of beer shipped from Germany for the German National Olympic Committee to hold invite-only functions. Conference rooms, dining facilities and the alumni house on campus are also rented out for six corporate groups and the Canadian delegation.
