SGA begins campaign to clean up campus litter

George Cheatham

The SGA introduced new legislation to deal with litter on campus this month. The new legislation calls for each WC club and organization to adopt one of 24 areas on campus.

SEA leader Melissa Farmer recalled, "We put legislation in the SGA." She explained the program, saying, "They [organizations which adopt a section] are supposed to plan just a couple clean-ups of that section."

So far, the KAs are committed to clean the area outside the CAC; the Zetas are responsible for the area around Goldstein and the Arts Center; FORCE and the SAMs are considering adopting areas which have not been determined yet; SEA is committed to selecting an area but have not picked one yet; the Crew team is considering adopting the area around the boat house.

According to SGA Building and Grounds Committee Chair Melissa Downs, the program is not intended to be fully implemented this semester.

She explained, "I'm not really trying to get it going full-blown this semester ... This semester is going to be a trial run."

Downs plans on having only limited activities this semester. "The only reason it's going so slow [is that] I'm waiting for an updated list of club leaders ... I've already had some people contact me, and I've talked to some other people."

Downs continued, "I'm just trying to get people who care and actually want to take care of part of campus."

She has broader hopes for next semester, saying, "[I hope to] get it set up and leave it in the possession of the Building and Grounds Committee of the SGA."

Downs described why the SGA saw fit to pass this legislation, "One of the reasons we're doing this is [that] the Board of Visitors and Governors noticed [litter] ... last semester when they were on campus [for their meeting]."

The campaign's ultimate goal, according to Farmer, is that "when people come [to] visit, it [the campus] looks presentable."
