Women's basketball "turns over" season

Katie Kastner

Thirty-one turnovers did the Shorewomen in against Muhlenburg, and turnovers have been crucial in the basketball games throughout year.

This season, after 23 contests, the Shorewomen average nearly 24 turnovers per game. In relation, they only average a mere 15 assists per game.

Anyone who knows basketball knows that their assist-to-turnover ratio, (.625 percent) is not up to par.

Seventeen turnovers in the first half alone is what hurt Washington as they were never able to catch up to the speed of the Mules.

Even their hot shooting, 50 percent, was not enough as Muhlenburg entered the locker rooms with a slight 32-20 lead.

The Shorewomen cooled off in the second half as they shot 37 percent to finish at 43 percent for the game. Muhlenberg, meanwhile, warmed up and shot 46 percent in the period to finish at 36 percent in the contest.

Sophomore Katie Piringer's 17 points paced the Shorewomen as she hit three-of-five three-point field goal attempts. Sophomore guards Yianna Patronas and Karen Simos each added 10 points.

Better handling of the ball and less turnovers would have given Washington a much better chance of pulling ahead on the Mules.

The Shorewomen look to have a tighter grip on the ball in their last contest of the season when they travel to Western Maryland tomorrow.
