Best women's lacrosse season in 20 years?

Heather Reader

For nineteen years, Washington College has fielded a women's lacrosse team. This year, being the teams 20th year of existence, the Shorewomen may just have the best team yet on the field.

With a pre-season ranking and a strong base of returning players, with only one graduating senior entering the 2002 campaign, the Washington College women's lacrosse team is looking forward to an exciting season.

Captain and lone senior Robyn Necker will lead the team on the defensive with junior co-captain Amy Stein. Juniors Paige Heller and Betty Weller, who play quarter back and midfielder respectively, are the offensive captains.

"This season we have a lot to look forward to since we are a stronger team than we have been in the past two years that I have played here, and it shows because our motivation, and commitment are apparent," said Stein.

"The team is deep and talented both stick and strengthwise," said Head Coach Eleanor Shriver-Magee. "This year, the team has better strength conditioning than in years past, which will help us a great deal at the beginning of season play." Shriver-Magee notes that certain players should be on everyone's "to watch" list as they played well in the pre-season. Sophomore D Tracy Lynch, classmate and mid-defense Erin Alessi, freshman A Lindsey Eichner and sophomores Mandy Higdon and Johanna McCormick, who are both good goalies. Sophomore Janet Studdiford, who led the team last year in goals, has also greatly improved with her stick skills.

Stein and the rest of the team are looking forward to their first scrimmage this Sunday against nationally ranked Randolph Macon. She says, "We have been tenaciously preparing for the scrimmage, and we are all psyched for it!"

The Shorewomen open their season with an away game against Goucher on March 2 at 1 p.m. Last year, in the non-conference contest, Goucher beat the Shorewomen, 16-11.

This year, Shriver-Magee mentions, "Our goal is to play one game at a time, so right now we are just focusing on the Goucher game."

She also states, "This team has lots of potential to have a good season, but there are lots of variables that will play into that. This is the 20th year there has been a team here at Washington College, and this is the most talented team by far."

Come support the Shorewomen as they look to start off on the right foot.
