The Washington College women's swim team may have gone undefeated in their dual meet season, but they have yet to win the conference crown.
The women swimmers have a strong team, which has pushed the program to new heights.
Coach Kim Lessard and her Shorewomen swimmers made a splash with their victory over Gettysburg. The win resulted in the destruction of a huge Bullet winning streak as well as the start of dual meet season wins for Washington College.
The team continued forth to the ECAC championships held at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in New Jersey. Despite the team's lack of diving entrants, they still finished first and took home the victory, surging past all other competitors.
The Shorewomen will look to their past championship meet experience as well as to the talent coming from the lanes by many freshmen who have proved themselves worthy of the title champions this past season.
The Shorewomen have had continued success in several events such as the short distance freestyle events swam by Stacey Sines. WC has also captured numerous first place finishes in the long distance freestyle events, most often swam by Pam Vasquez.
Maggie Klag has also made NCAA "B" cut times and broken numerous school records, most of which she set last season, for her performances in the breaststroke events.
The Shorewomen relay teams have also contributed to the team's success. However, they have not been as instrumental as the numerous individual wins secured by Washington.
In a team sport where individuals are very much apparent, the Washington College women's swim team proves that there very well may be an "I" in "Team."
While the Shoremen and Shorewomen train together in the pool they are all out for themselves come meet time. While it is instrumental that each team member places as highly as possible, every woman in the pool is only thinking of herself and the best she can do. It is that kind of attitude of being the best individually that enables the team to be the best it can be as a complete squad.
The Shorewomen push one another in practice, as well as in the races, which results in many first and second place finishes for WC.
While every point counts, without the top-scoring finishes, the Shorewomen would not be on the road they currently travel.
But they have made it this far and now they look ahead to the Centennial Conference Championships.
Their goal is simple, to win, both individually and as a team. Last year's Centennial Conference Champion was Swarthmore.
The Garnet Tide stood undefeated this season until swimming just last week against the Shorewomen.
Washington easily took the meet and the outcome was decided long before the final relay. This meet was predicted to be the most difficult of the Shorewomen's season.
Now they attempt to overcome the final obstacle and capture the Centennial Conference crown for good.
