Since the rain postponed game after game for the Washington College baseball team, there was only one way to get those games back; play six games in four days.
The Shoremen started that long stretch of games on March 27, when they traveled to Swarthmore, PA in their Centennial Conference schedule opener.
WC scored two runs in the first and fifth innings to lead 4-0. Another run in the seventh put them up 5-0.
Junior pitcher Tom Palazzo pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, walking four, and striking out five batters in the win. He kept the Garnet off the scoreboard until the eighth inning.
Sophomore Derek Smith picked up the save in 1 1/3 innings of work.
Senior centerfielder Mike Scozzafava went two-for-three with three runs scored at the top of the Shoremen lineup. Freshman second baseman Marco Muscella went three-for-five on the day, scored the two runs and had an RBI. Senior catcher Dan Evans also brought in a pair of runs in the effort.
The next matchup was a doubleheader against Lincoln University. The Shoremen won both games, 10-0, in five innings.
In game one, freshman Shawn Hampt threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 batters. Hampt's two walks were the only Lincoln baserunners all game.
WC only had four hits in the first game, but walked seven times, and one batter was hit by a pitch. Lincoln also committed five errors in the loss.
In the second game, WC scored at least one run an inning. Freshman Alex Jacobine made his first career start on the mound.
He pitched first four innings, allowed one hit, struck out five and walked two.
Freshman Clint Connolly pitched a one-two-three inning in the fifth to end the game.
Leading the offensive effort was sophomore thirdbaseman Sean Foley. He went two-for-two with a pair of walks, scored three runs, stole two bases and had an RBI.
The Shoremen then dropped their next game against Swarthmore, losing by a score of 7-6.
The game was called due to darkness in the ninth inning with the score 8-7, the inning was thus erased, going back to the last full inning completed. Highlighting the game for the Shoremen was the back-to-back home runs by sophomore designated hitter Adam Golding and freshman thirdbaseman James Barossi. Barossi currently leads the Shoremen in the homerun department with two.
WC then lost their next two games, both conference match-ups, in a double header at Ursinus. The scores were 8-4 and 3-0, respectively.
In the first game, the Shoremen were not able to hold a fifth inning 2-1 lead. Ursinus scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Eight Shoremen had one hit each in game one and four different Shoremen recorded one RBI.
Ursinus pitcher Michael Lombardo allowed just three hits in the second game, leading the Bears to the 3-0 shutout. Lombardo also fanned eight batters and did not allow one free pass.
WC freshman pitcher John Marshall went the distance, striking out five and only allowing one earned run in the loss. Barossi picked up two of Washington's three hits.
The Shoremen now find themselves near the basement of the Centennial Conference with a 1-3 record. Overall, they still remain above .500 percent at 10-7-1.
Washington travels to Johns Hopkins today for a match-up against the first place Blue Jays. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
