Baseball
Who says freshmen are just bench warmers now-a-days? Not freshman Shawn Hampt, who was named the Centennial Conference's Pitcher of the Week on April 1 for his five inning no-hitter against Lincoln University last week. Hampt recorded 11 strikeouts and only allowed two baserunners, both by walk, in the win.
Hampt, who hails from Westminster, MD, is currently 2-0 on the year and looks to have a promising career on the hill for the Shoremen.
Women's Lacrosse
Tearing through their Centennial Conference schedule thus far, the Washington College women's lacrosse team features junior midfielder Betty Weller as this week's conference player of the week.
Weller led the Shorewomen with four goals in a 12-10 win against Western Maryland and followed up that performance with three goals and one assist in a 19-7 win over Bryn Mawr. What is more impressive is that Weller has scored seven times on her last 11 shot attempts.
Rowing
Last week, on the Chester River,Washington College's women's and men's rowing teams hosted Johns Hopkins University and St. John's College (MD) for the ninth annual Caspersen Cup Regatta.
All three women's boats were victorious in their separate races, including the women's first Varsity Eight, that beat the Blue Jays by 40 seconds.
The men's boats did not fair as well as the women's, though their hard work and finishes ensured a piece of the cup. The men's lightweight four and heavyweight four each took second place, while Hopkins won each men's race.
Washington tied Hopkins overall for a share of the 2002 cup with 41 points apiece, while St. Johns ended up with 22 points. This is the second time two teams have tied for the cup and the seventh time WC has been the winner of this event.
Volleyball
The WC volleyball team signed their fourth coach in team history with the new addition of Mr. Carter LeBrocq.
LeBrocq has been an active volleyball player for over thirty years and brings a large amount of knowledge and coaching experience to the Shorewomen.
Sailing
The Washington College sailing team placed 12th of 16 schools at the Boston Dinghy Cup this past weekend. Races were only held on Saturday; Sunday's races were canceled due to lack of wind. Harvard finished first at the event, followed by Tufts in second and Dartmouth in third.
Sophomore Mike Buckley and senior Lisa Semanick earned the highest finish for WC, placing in sixth in A division.
The teams are in action again this weekend as they travel to King's Point for MAISA team race.
