The Shorewomen suffered their first loss of the season against Notre Dame. They managed, however to get back on track by winning their next game when they faced Villa Julie last Saturday at home
Sept. 4 against Notre Dame, the Shorewomen failed to score a goal despite taking over 20 shots on the Notre Dame goal.
Notre Dame managed to knock three in for the 3-0 victory over the Shorewomen. Heather Karbonski opened the scoring at 13:46.
Megan Haskins scored at 57:35 and Becky Sullens added the final goal at 82:37.
Washington junior goalkeeper Mandy Higdon made six saves for the Shorewomen in the loss.
Washington out-shot Notre Dame, 21-9, for the game.
The Shorewomen came back in the game against Villa Julie on Sept. 7.
Villa Julie struck first in the middle of the first half when Erica Kiss scored on a penalty kick.
The Shorewomen evened the score with an unassisted goal by freshman forward Steph Bradley at 27:45.
The score remained tied until 77:04 when a Villa Julie own goal gave Washington the lead. Shorewoman freshman forward Laura Mozzer nicked a slow-rolling shot past a downed keeper.
A Villa Julie defender reached the ball two yards outside the goal, but kicked the ball into the net in her attempt to save it.
Junior forward Meghan Hartzell knocked in a third goal for the Shorewomen off a rebound shot from the ever-dangerous Bradley.
"We proved to ourselves that we are the better team, we can come back from being down, and we have the grit and determination to out work our opponents," said senior back/midfielder Kelly McClure.
The victory over Villa Julie brings the Shorewomen?s record to 3-1, which ties their wins for all of last season.
Following this week's games, Hartzell became the first Shorewoman to earn Centennial Conference Player of the Week honors for women's soccer.
Hartzell scored two goals in each of the Shorewomen's two games in the season-opening Showdown on the Shore tournament, leading WC to the championship.
She added another goal in the Shorewomen's 3-1 win over Villa Julie and has amassed five goals and two assists thus far this season.
The Shorewomen will be in action tomorrow when they travel to Stevens Tech for a 1 p.m. game.
