The Shorewomen played two games last week, against Wesley College and McDaniel College, to conclude their 2002 season.
WC 2, Wesley 0
Saturday the Shorewomen picked up a win against Wesley to tie their record for wins in a season.
The Shorewomen got on the board 8:30 into the game, when junior midfielder Jen Cox scored off an assist from freshman forward Steph Bradley.
The Shorewomen scored the game's only other goal 15 minutes later when sophomore midfielder/forward Carly Hankins knocked in a goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Colleen McLoughlin.
WC also won eight games in 2000.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Chapman made one save to record her third shutout of the season.
McDaniel 3, WC 0
The next day, in their final game of the season, the Shorewomen fell 3-0 to McDaniel.
McDaniel's Nikki Varoutsas scored the only goal of the first half, at 11:30, and then scored again in the second to give the Green Terror a 2-0 lead at the 56:56 mark.
Megan Matson added the final goal at 74:45.
Chapman made nine saves for the Shorewomen to finish with exactly 100 for the season.
The Shorewomen finished the season 8-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
This season the Shorewomen's record improved dramatically over last season, when the Shorewomen were 3-13-2 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
This season, junior forward Meghan Hartzell, a newcomer to the team, made a big impact on the team's success. She tallied ten goals for the Shorewomen this season and had four assists.
Also, Cox was a strong returning player for the Shorewomen as she was able to score five goals and pick up five assists throughout the season.
"Jen Cox was a great return addition to the team. Colleen McLoughlin emerged as a solid force defensively and Meg Hartzell obviously knew how to score," said head coach Eleanor Shriver Magee.
"I think that we will continue to improve and be respected by all opponents in the future,"
Their record shows that the Shorewomen definitely improved on the field this year, but many of this season's successes for the Shorewomen were not on the field.
"We accomplished more this season off the field then on. The team really came together as a unit during the last weeks of the season and with that, the soccer program from an emotional standpoint grew," said Shriver Magee.
"The tradition of [women's] soccer has been slow to establish here at WC. This team in the fifth year has done a lot to foster the tradition and commitment to the team.
"They are great people and their soccer skills are some of the best this program has ever seen," continued Shriver Magee. "8-11 is a respectable result for the year and they ended the season competing hard and respecting each other."
The team will graduate three seniors this year: midfielder/forward Sarah Polhamus, and team captains midfielder/back Kelly McClure and defender Betty Weller.
"The seniors have helped us to develop this stronger commitment and they will leave but their spirits will be around for years to come," said Shriver Magee.
