The Washington College men's swim team dropped a very close 95-93 Centennial Conference meet to visiting McDaniel Saturday at Casey Swim Center while the women picked up a 148-49 victory.
The men's meet was highlighted by freshman Andy Wesolek, who won two individual events for the Shoremen.
"The team had many wonderful performances. The men had an exciting team effort and just came up two points short," said head coach Kim Lessard. "We are very ready going into the last week preparing for [Centennial Conference championships]."
The Shoremen led 70-67 after eight events, but a one-two finish in the 500 freestyle gave the Green Terror its first lead of the afternoon at 80-75. The Shoremen jumped back on top, 89-84, after junior John Evans won the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best time of 2:15.72.
The final event was the 400 freestyle relay and a 3:33.06 performance by McDaniel gave the Green Terror a 16-second win in the event and a two-point win in the meet.
Wesolek won the 50 freestyle in 22.34 and the 100 freestyle in 49.39.
Evans and junior Alex Kuhn, who won the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 1:50.55, accounted for the Shoremen's other individual first-place finishes.
Wesolek, Evans, Kuhn, and senior Pat Cline won the meet-opening 400 medley relay in 4:00.29.
Kuhn added a second-place finish of 2:02.44 in the 200 backstroke. Senior J.C. Cronin was second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:39.74 and sophomore Ken Jensen was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.39.
The men's record in dual meets dropped to 4-5 and 1-4 in the conference with the loss.
In the women's meet, junior Margaret Klag won two individual events and swam to an NCAA B Cut time in the 200 breaststroke. The Shorewomen improved to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the win.
Klag's B Cut time was good for first place and was a WC season-best performance of 2:28.29. She also won the 50 freestyle in 26.02.
Senior Pamela Vasquez took first place in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 5:11.52 and in the 1000 freestyle in 10:59.09.
Senior Rebecca Sirman won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.55 and the 200 backstroke in a WC season-best time of 2:17.21.
Senior Stacy Sines won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.32 and was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:16.48.
Senior Julie Meirs was first in the 200 butterfly in 2:12.09.
Sophomore Ana Prado finished second in both the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.37 and the 200 butterfly in 2:15.79.
Senior Heather Reader was second in the 1000 freestyle in 12:15.02, senior Sara Hardy was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.23, and freshman Chrissy Romano was second in the 200 backstroke in 2:18.30.
Freshman Ana Thomas was the Shorewomen's top finisher in the 100 freestyle, coming in second in 58.93.
Prado, Klag, Meirs, and Thomas won the 400 medley relay in 4:12.06 and Sines, Sirman, Rawson and Vasquez won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:53.86.
Both the men's and the women's swim teams will compete in the Centennial Conference Championships February 21 to 23 at Franklin & Marshall.
